Funeral Ceremonies in Contemporary Japan

Abstract:

The topic of master ́s thesis is the phenomenon of the death and establishment of the new mortuary rites. It shows how the demographic changes caused the transformation of the family lifestyle. The disintegration of the traditional family system and the release of bonds between relatives enabled the creation and re-definition of the way of viewing the death. The concept of death has transformed and created the new approach to the dead. The trend of urbanization and modernization has resulted in the developement of nuclear families and individuals living alone and had an impact on the traditional faith. The needs to create new alternative forms of the funerals were formed simultaneously. Alternatively, the mortuary rites appeal to aesthetics and environmental friendliness, two conditions which have been lacking in the before. Environmental awareness associated with the selected types of burial (jumokusō 樹木 葬, shizensō 自然葬) was able to stir up the debate about reviewing the existing state and counter too excessive formalism of traditional ceremonies. The funerals have become a private matter of the individuals or family. This whole process is accompanied by a number of innovative ways of expressing the respect for the deceased, sending the dead off, providing a better life for the deceased. There arose also a new portrayal of life after the death, which is often beyond the traditional. Since the funeral industry has grown up rapidly in Japan, the financial aspect is also the factor of the new mortuary rites.

Abstract:

Témou magisterskej diplomovej práce je fenomén smrti a vznik nových pohrebných obradov. Ukazuje, akým spôsobom demografické zmeny spôsobili premenu životného štýlu rodiny. Rozpadom klasického rodinného systému a uvoľnením sa väzieb medzi príbuznými, bolo možné vytvoriť a re-definovať spôsob nazerania na smrť. Koncept smrti sa premieňal a vytvoril i nové pojatie mŕtveho. Trend urbanizácie a modernizácie vyústil do vytvárania nukleárnych rodín a samostatne žijúcich jedincov a mal dopad na tradičnú vieru. Potreby vytvorenia nových alternatívnych foriem pohrebného obradu na seba nenechali dlho čakať. Alternatívne pohrebné obrady apelujú na estetickosť a ekologickosť, dva predpoklady, ktoré doteraz pri pohrebných obradoch chýbali. Environmentálne povedomie spájané s vybranými typmi pochovávania (jumokusō 樹木葬, shizensō 自然葬) dokázalo vyburcovať debatu o prehodnotení doterajšej situácie a kontrovalo prílišnému formalizmu tradičných obradov. Pohreby sa stávajú súkromnou, privátnou záležitosťou rodiny alebo jedincov. Celý tento proces je sprevádzaný množstvom inovatívnych spôsobov prejavu úcty zosnulému, rozlúčkou s ním, zaistením lepšieho života pre zosnulého. Vynára sa i nové stvárnenie života po smrti, ktoré sa často vymyká tradičnému. Rovnako, keďže sa v Japonsku veľmi rozmohol pohrebný priemysel, faktorom pre prijímanie nových pohrebných obradov je i finančná stránka.
