Spanish Renaissance Romance and its Perception in the Early Modern Central Europe

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce se zabývá recepcí španělské zábavné prózy Zlatého věku v českém prostředí, a to především španělského renesančního rytířského románu, který stál jako literární prozaický žánr u zrodu moderního románu a zároveň představoval velice úspěšný obchodní artikl španělské i evropské renesanční literatury. Při úspěšné recepci španělské zábavné literatury, především renesančního rytířského románu a románu pikareskního, sehrály velkou roli jeho francouzské a italské překlady a adaptace; a to nejen v samotné Francii a Itálii, ale také v ostatních částech Evropy. Čtenářská veřejnost románských i dalších evropských zemí, které byla díla španělské zábavné prózy Zlatého věku určena, se lišila svou sociální skladbou, kulturně vzdělanostním profilem i svými nároky na četbu, čtenářským preferencemi a zájmy. Česká literatura a kultura raného novověku nebyla uzavřena inspirujícímu vlivu španělské zábavné literatury Zlatého věku. Její recepce však byla omezena řadou faktorů a odehrávala se v oblasti čtenářského konzumu, zajišťovaného importem knižní originální i překladové produkce. Docházelo k ní většinou až od druhé poloviny 16. století, oproti románským zemím se zpožděním zhruba půl století. Neexistence široké čtenářské základny a malá rozvinutost domácí renesanční literatury v českých zemích 16.–18. století byla hlavní příčinou slabé a omezené recepce španělské zábavné literatury Zlatého věku. Potřeby aristokratických čtenářů, případně čtenářů intelektuálně vzdělaných, import knih ze zahraničí dostatečně pokryl. V importu byly vedle španělských originálů výrazně zastoupeny románské překlady – italské a francouzské. Španělské edice jsou zaznamenány u čtenářů se španělským prostředím, španělským jazykem či kulturou nějakým způsobem spjatých (rodinná pouta, politické zájmy). Reprezentuje ji především vzdělaná aristokracie proevropsky a prošpanělsky orientovaná. Italské překlady španělských rytířských románů v importu převažovaly na konci 16. a v první třetině 17. století. Byly jazykově i cenově daleko dostupnější než tisky španělské. Francouzské překlady španělských rytířských renesančních románů vydávané zejména ve druhé polovině 17. století a ve století 18. jsou zastoupeny nejen v knihovnách aristokratických, ale i měšťanských. Kulturní transfer francouzské překladové literatury se neuskutečňoval jen přímo, ale často také zprostředkovaně přes německé kulturní prostředí. O existenci bohemikálních překladů španělské renesanční rytířské literatury v období 16.–18. století nemáme průkazných svědectví (o existenci české verze Amadíse de Gaula existují pouze zmínky v dobové literatuře přelomu 16. a 17. století). Nastupující generace české inteligence národního obrození na konci 18. století četla španělskou literaturu, včetně rytířských románů, v němčině nebo ve francouzštině a ve výjimečných případech i ve španělštině. Potřeba četby v mateřském jazyce však v národně vlastenecké spisovatelské obci narůstala. Vznik prvních překladů (Don Quijote, Amadís de Gaula) do češtiny ve čtyřicátých letech 19. století souvisel s obnovou národního kulturního a literárního života na konci 18. století. Součástí této obnovy bylo i oživení překladatelské aktivity v českém jazyce a navázání na překladatelské tradice doby předbělohorské. České překlady vznikly relativně velmi pozdě; importovaná originální i cizojazyčná španělská literatura Zlatého věku, bohatě zastoupená ve šlechtických knižních sbírkách, nebyla bohužel k překladům využita v době předbělohorské ani v době následující. Abstract:

The doctor thesis deals with phenomena of the Spanish entertainment literature of the Golden Age in the Czech Lands. Special attention is paid to the Spanish Renaissance romance which gave birth to the modern novel and, at the same time, represented a very successful and desirable business commodity of the Spanish and European Renaissance literature. French and Italian translations and adaptations of the Spanish entertainment literature, especially of the Renaissance romance and picaresque novel, played an important role in the positive and successful reception of this literature genre not only in France and Italy but also in the other European regions. The readers of the Romance and other European countries who were generally considered as recipients of the Spanish entertainment literature of the Golden Age differed as to their social, cultural and educational background as well as to their reading demands, preferences and interests. Both Czech literature and culture of early modern age were not negligent of the inspiring influence of the Spanish entertainment literature of the Golden Age. Notwithstanding, its perception was limited by a range of circumstances and was confined to the foreign book production either in original language or in translation imported to the Czech Lands from abroad. Withal, the Czech readers reflected the Spanish book production as late as since the middle of the 16th century, about a half century later than in the Romance countries. Absence of an extensive class of readers and low development of the domestic Renaissance literature in the Czech Lands in the 16th-18th century was the main cause which brought about feeble and limited reception of the Spanish entertainment literature of the Golden Age in the Czech Lands. The book production imported from abroad could easily satisfy the needs and demands of the aristocratic readers and/or the readers who were educated and intellectually active. Beside the Spanish original versions, the French and Italian translations were included in an important amount among the imported books. The books in Spanish are frequented in the libraries of the readers who were somehow connected to the Spanish environment, Spanish language or Spanish culture (family relations, political interests). This sort of readers is represented namely by the educated aristocracy with friendly attitude towards the Western Europe and Spain. Italian translations of the Spanish romances predominated in the imported book production in the end of the 16th and in the first third of the 17th century. Considering their price and language, they were better affordable and accessible for the Czech readers than the Spanish originals. The French translations of the Spanish Renaissance romances published mainly in the second half of the 17th century and in the following 18th century are frequented not only in the aristocratic libraries but also in the book collections of bourgeoisie. The cultural transfer of the books in French translation into the Czech Lands was not lead always directly but also via German cultural milieu. There are no sufficient evidences about possible Czech translations of the Spanish Renaissance romances during the 16th-18th century. The conjecture about existence of the Czech version of Amadís de Gaula is only supported by the sketchy references in the contemporary literature from the turn of the 16th and 17th century. The incoming generation of the Czech intelligence of the National Enlightenment in the end of the 18th century read the Spanish literature, including the romances, in German or French and in exceptional cases also in Spanish. However, the demand the national patriotic community of the Czech writers on lecture in the vernacular language was slowly gaining over the books in the foreign languages. The coherent part of this renewal was also revival of the Czech translation activity accompanied by return to the Czech translation traditions dating back to the time before the Battle of the White Mountain. The first Czech translations of the Spanish entertainment literature and romances are dating back to the considerably late time. The imported Spanish books, either in original language or in translation, richly frequented in the aristocratic libraries, were unfortunately exploited for translation neither in the time before the Battle of White Mountain nor after. The situation was brought about by the literary development in the Czech Lands which was strongly influenced by the specific political and economic circumstances, religious conditions and cultural and educational milieu of the early modern society in the Central Europe.
