Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce analyzuje vybraná díla americké literatury, která v sobě obsahují prvky španělské kultury a zabývají se identitou a mentalitou Španělů. Vzhledem k obsáhlosti tématu jsem práci zúžila na analýzu děl několika významných prozaiků, zastupujících jednotlivá časová období od dob kolonizace po konec dvacátého století. Práce je rozdělena do čtyř kapitol, z nichž první obsahuje vymezení charakteristických rysů španělské kultury s důrazem na formování národní identity a mentality Španělů. Následující kapitoly se věnují rozboru jednotlivých děl, konkrétně analýze Alhambry Washingtona Irvinga, tří ?španělských? románů Ernesta Hemingwaye a stěžejních prací chicanských spisovatelů, Sandry Cisnerosové a Alejandra Moralese. Hlavním přínosem této diplomové práce je důkladná analýza španělských prvků u těchto autorů s cílem dokázat, že historické vazby mezi USA a Španělskem, společně se zájmem Američanů o Evropské země a jejich kulturu, byly podnětem ke vzniku řady zajímavých a pro americkou literaturu přínosných děl.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis concentrates on the analysis of the selected works of American authors, containing Spanish elements and dealing with Spanish culture, identity and mentality. Because of the extensiveness of this topic, the thesis concentrates only on prose and emphasizes only the most important or the most interesting representatives of each period, from the times of colonization to the end of the twentieth century. The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first defines the typical features of Spanish culture, stressing the formation of Spanish identity and mentality. Following chapters concentrate on the analysis of individual works, i.e. The Alhambra by Washington Irving, the three ?Spanish? pieces by Ernest Hemingway and the writing of Chicano/a authors, Sandra Cisneros and Alejandro Morales. The core of the thesis is the detailed analysis of Spanish elements in the works mentioned above, to prove that the historical linkage between the United States and Spain and the interest of American writers in the European countries produced an amount of literary works that are interesting and contributive to American literature.
