Erich Maria Remarque: life and work about the destinies of German emigrants before and during the Second World War to focus on "Arc de Triomphe", "Night in Lisbon" and "Flotsam"

Abstract:

In my diploma thesis I am dealing with the well-known German author Erich Maria Remarque, also with his work and the destinies of the main characters of his novels before and during the Second World War. The main theme is the problem of emigration and its influence on the main characters of Remarque´s novels in this time. I worked with three novels of Erich Maria Remarque - „Arch of Triumph“, „The Night in Lisbon“ and „Flotsam“, which were basic for my analysis. I divided my diploma thesis into several chapters. At first, I introduced Erich Maria Remarque, his life from the early times, during both World Wars and also in the post-war period. A big part of my thesis is dedicated to the novels of Erich Maria Remarque, namely „Arch of Triumph“, “The Night in Lisbon“ and „Flotsam“. The author was also often connected with the term „Lost Generation“. A short part of my paper is concerned to this issue. However, I analyze three novels, which were chosen for my thesis. I scrutinized the central figures and the structure of these novels. In the end of my thesis, I am dealing with the historical background of these novels; then with National Socialism and its influence on the Remarque´s style of writing. The practical part is concentrated on the interpretation of the results achieved via questionnaire survey. The questionnaire survey was focused on the opinions of the students at Masaryk University on Erich Maria Remarque, his life, and work; and particularly analyzed how good the students understood to these topics. The aim of this thesis is to confirm the theory that Erich Maria Remarque belongs to the best-known authors among our students.

Abstract:

V mé práci se zabývám velmi známým německým spisovatelem jménem Erich Maria Remarque, jeho díly a osudy hlavních hrdinů jeho románů před a především během Druhé světové války. Hlavním tématem je problematika emigrace a její vliv na hlavní hrdiny Remarqueových románů v této době. K analýze jsem použil tři romány od Ericha Maria Remarquea – „Vítězný oblouk“, „Noc v Lisabonu“ a „Miluj bližního svého“. Mou diplomovou práci jsem rozdělil do několika kapitol. Nejprve jsem se zabýval představením Ericha Maria Remarquea, to znamená jeho životem od počátku, během obou světových válek a také v poválečném období. Dále patřila velká část mé práce dílům Ericha Maria Remarquea, konkrétně „Vítěznému oblouku“, „Noci v Lisabonu“ a „Miluj bližního svého“. Autor byl také často spojován s pojmem „Ztracená generace“. Také této problematice věnuji krátkou část. Přirozeně analyzuji především tři romány, které jsem si vybral pro mou práci. Zkoumal jsem hrdiny a stavbu těchto románů. Na konci práce se zabývám historickým pozadím těchto románů. Národním socialismem a vlivem tohoto režimu na Remarqueův styl psaní. Praktická část je orientována na interpretaci výsledků dosažených dotazníkovým šetřením. Dotazníkové šetření je zaměřeno na názory studentů Masarykovy univerzity v Brně na Ericha Maria Remarquea, jeho život a díla a zabývá se konkrétně tím, jak dobře rozumí studenti této problematice. Cíl této práce spočívá v potvrzení teorie, že Erich Maria Remarque patří k nejznámějším autorům mezi našimi studenty.
