The Berlin Wall: the perspective of a devided generation

Abstract:

Pád Berlínské zdi, která několik desetiletí rozdělovala západní a východní Němce, předznamenal spojení dvou kulturně, ekonomicky a sociálně odlišných společností v jednom politicky ustaveném státě. Cílem bakalářské práce je prozkoumat hodnotové a mentální odlišnosti generace dnešních třicátníků z Východu a Západu, kteří dětství prožili v rozděleném státě a dospívali již ve sjednocené zemi. Výchozím konceptem vysvětlujícím formování generační identity je teorie Karla Mannheima, podle níž hraje v tomto procesu významnou roli společná socializace a zážitky z formujících let. Práce se zabývá také dialektikou vzájemných vztahů obyvatel Východu a Západu před a po sjednocení země a odkrývá význam obranných strategií založených na kontrole a moci. Hlubší pohled na problematiku formování generační identity poskytuje empirická část s využitím metod kvalitativního výzkumu. Na základě interpretace narativních rozhovorů s příslušníky generace třicátníků z východního a západního Německa je v této souvislosti prokázán vliv rodinného prostředí a společných zkušeností vrstevníků.

Abstract:

The fall of the Berlin Wall, which had separated West Germans and East Germans for decades, led to the reunion of two culturally, economically and socially different societies into one politically established state. The aim of the bachelor thesis is to examine both value and mental differences within the generation of people in their thirties from the East and the West respectively who spent their childhood in the originally separated states, yet the teenage years in the reunited country. As a basis for explaining the process of forming the generation identity is used the Karl Mannheim’s theory, according to which common socialization and experiences of the formative years play a significant role. The thesis also deals with the dialectics of mutual relationships of inhabitants from the East and the West before and after the Unification, and reveals the importance of defensive strategies which are based on control and power. Using methods of qualitative research, the empirical part presents a deeper insight into the issues of forming the generation identity. Based on the interpretation of narrative interviews with members of the generation in their thirties from East and West Germany respectively, the influence of the family background and common experience of the peers is proved.
