The Doctrine of the Trinity in Richard of St. Victor's Work

Abstract:

The dissertation contains three parts. The first one deals with the life and experiences of the Augustinian canon Richard of St. Victor (? 1173). This part presents a complete biography of this remarkable figure of the 12th century Parisian theology. The second part is devoted to Richard's theology and its characteristics, with respect to the monastic tradition and the emerging scholastics, and also to his authentic treatises. Those are meticulously arranged and classified. The last and the most important part of the dissertation deals with Richard's teachings about the Holy Trinity. First of all, it is presented an analysis of three of his treatises which thoroughly deal with the questions of Trinitarian theology. After an excursion into the depths of the Trinitarian debates and discussions at the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries, it is proceeded to presenting Richard's pivotal theme, which is the knowledge of the Holy Trinity. This is followed by an analysis of the main issues regarding the Immanent Trinity, which Richard dealt with in his works. Then it is continued with an analysis of the questions regarding the economic Trinity, which are often overlooked in the current debate. The main point of this analysis is Richard's Trinitarian conception of Anselm's satisfaction theory. The last presented topic is the practical significance of the Trinitarian Mystery and its connection with the selected treatises of dogmatic theology in Richard's interpretation.

Abstract:

Disertační práce je rozdělena do tří částí. V první části pojednává o životních osudech augustiniánského kanovníka Richarda ze Sv. Viktora (?1173). Jedná se o ucelenou biografii této význačné postavy pařížské teologie 12. století. Druhá část je věnována Richardově teologii, její povaze s ohledem na monastickou tradici a utvářející se scholastiku a zároveň dochovaným autentickým spisům, konkrétně jejich uspořádání a členění. Poslední a hlavní část pojednává o Richardově učení o Trojici. Předně je prezentována analýza tří jeho spisů, které se cele věnují otázkám trinitární teologie. Po exkurzu do trojiční debaty a diskusí na přelomu 11. a 12. století je představeno stěžejní Richardovo téma, kterým je poznání Nejsvětější Trojice. Následuje analýza hlavních otázek imanentní Trojice, kterými se Richard ve svém díle zabýval, a na ni navazuje analýza otázek stran ekonomické Trojice, které bývají v současné debatě často zanedbávány. Hlavním bodem této analýzy je Richardovo trinitární pojetí Anselmovy satisfakční teorie. Posledním představeným tématem je praktický význam trojičního mystéria a jeho propojení s vybranými pojednáními dogmatické teologie v Richardově podání.
