Comparison of selected psychological and demographic characteristics of working and non-working mothers during pregnancy and after childbirth

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje problematice mateřské zaměstnanosti brzy po porodu, která je v souvislosti s vyvažováním rodinného a pracovního života (work-family conflict) často diskutovaným tématem. Práce si proto klade za cíl zmapovat, jak se liší matky, které se rozhodnou začít brzy po porodu pracovat od těch, které zůstávají s dítětem na mateřské dovolené a nepracují. Výzkum byl proto zaměřen na matky v těhotenství a následně 3 měsíce po porodu a bylo u nich zjišťováno, jak se vybrané sociodemografické (věk, vzdělání, plánovanost těhotenství, počet dosud proběhlých porodů, partnerský vztah apod.) a psychologické charakteristiky (depresivita, úzkostnost, psychosociální stres, vztah k dítěti) u nich měnily v čase (měření v těhotenství a pak ve třech měsících věku dítěte) a jak se lišily u matek již po porodu pracujících a matek nepracujících. Výzkum byl realizován na vzorku 307 matek ve věku 20 – 46 let (M = 30,8; SD = 4,4) zapojených do longitudinálního projektu DOMOV Institutu výzkumu dětí, mládeže a rodiny na Fakultě sociálních studií Masarykovy univerzity v Brně. Jednalo se 170 nepracujících a 134 pracujících matek, které začaly pracovat do 3 měsíců od porodu. Na základě výsledků provedených analýz lze konstatovat, že se pracující a nepracující matky signifikantně lišily ve vykazované míře úzkostnosti, depresivity a psychoso-ciálního stresu po porodu (nepracující matky ve 3 měsících po porodu zažívaly vyšší míru úzkostnosti, depresivity a psychosociálního stresu než matky pracující), ale ve stejných charakteristikách v těhotenství či ve kvalitě vztahu ke svému očekávanému a následně narozenému dítěti už nikoli. Další signifikantní rozdíly však byly mezi oběma skupinami matek shledány v několika sociodemografických charakteristikách. Ukázalo se, že mezi matkami, které se rozhodly začít pracovat brzy po porodu, převažují prvorodičky, ženy s partnerem a matky v porovnání s nepracujícími ženami starší, což může reflektovat demografický trend rostoucího odkladu mateřství do vyššího věku z důvodu větších možností vzdělávání, cestování i pracovních příležitostí typických pro dnešní moderní společnost. V závěru práce jsou pak výsledky srovnávání i analýz obecnějších souvislostí v souladu s dalšími výzkumy diskutovány a opomenuty nejsou ani možná vysvětlení, limity studie a doporučení pro další výzkum.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the topic of maternal employment soon after childbirth, which is often discussed in the context of work-family conflict. The aim of the thesis was to explore how mothers who decide to start working soon after childbirth differ from those who stay with the child on maternity leave and do not work. The research was therefore focused on mothers during pregnancy and then 3 months after childbirth, and it was examined how selected sociodemographic (age, education, planning of pregnancy, number of childbirths, partnership etc.) and psychological characteristics (depression, anxiety, psychosocial stress, bonding with child) changed in time (measurement during pregnancy and then at 3 months after childbirth) and how they differed in working and non-working mothers after childbirth. The research was conducted on a sample of 307 mothers aged 20 – 46 years (M = 30,8; SD = 4,4) involved in the longitudinal project DOMOV of the Institute for Research of Children, Youth and Family at the Faculty of Social Studies of Masaryk University in Brno. There were 170 non-working and 134 working mothers who started working within 3 months after childbirth. It can be concluded based on the results of the analyses that working and non-working mothers were significantly different in the reported degree of anxiety, depression and psychosocial stress after childbirth (non-working mothers experienced higher levels of anxiety, depression and psychosocial stress than working mothers at 3 months postpartum), but not in the same characteristics in pregnancy or in the quality of the bonding with their expected and subsequently born child. Other significant differences, however, were found between both groups in several sociodemographic characteristics. It turned out that among mothers who decided to start work soon after childbirth, predominate primiparous mothers, women with partner and older mothers. It may reflect the demographic trend of increasing delayed maternity due to greater opportunities for education, traveling and working typical of today's modern society. At the end of the thesis, the results of comparison and analysis of more general contexts are discussed. Possible explanations, limits of this study, and recommendations for further research are presented as well.
