Graphene derivatives from fluorographene

Abstract:

Fluorographene (FG) is a stable and stoichiometric covalent halo-derivative of graphene, initially considered as the two dimensional analogue of Teflon?, and thus similarly chemically inert. Nevertheless, it was shown that the C-F bond in FG is subjective to nucleophilic attack. For instance, amines have been reported to react with FG. In this work the chemical reactivity of FG with primary amine molecules is exploited to demonstrate how physicochemical properties can be tuned leading to possibly useful graphene derivatives. Due to the high reactivity of FG, the hydrophobicity and dispersibility of the final graphene derivatives can be adjusted using appropriate reagents selected among the large library of available amines. In addition, crosslinking of graphene flakes can easily be obtained, when diamino molecules are used. The reactivity of FG with some other nucleophiles is studied, such as with the azide anion. It is unexpectedly found that, although azide moiety itself is not stable at the reaction conditions and no azide graphene derivative is detected, complete defluorination takes place, as well as very high level of nitrogen doping of graphene. Considering the large applicability of nitrogen-doped graphenes for energy-related applications, this finding prompts for further studies on the mechanism of N-doping and on identifying in detail the chemical environment of nitrogen atoms.

Abstract:

Fluorografen (FG) je stabilní a stechiometricky kovalentní halogen-derivát grafenu, který byl z počátku považován za dvourozměrný analog Teflonu? a tedy za podobně chemicky inertní. Nicméně bylo prokázáno, že vazba C F v FG podléhá působení nukleofilů. Například byly zmíněné reakce aminů s FG. V této práci je využita chemická reaktivita FG s molekulami primárních aminů, aby se ukázalo, jakým způsobem mohou být laděny fyzikálně-chemické vlastnosti grafenu, což může vést k eventuálně užitečným derivátům grafenu. Vzhledem k velké reaktivitě FG může být hydrofobicita a dispergovatelnost konečných derivátů grafenu upravena, použitím vhodných reakčních činidel, vybraných z velké knihovny dostupných aminů. Navíc lze snadno dosáhnout k zesíťování grafenových vloček, použije-li se diamino molekuly. Byla také studována reaktivita FG s některými jinými nukleofily, jako je azidový anion. Neočekávaně se zjístilo, že i když samotná azidová skupina není při reakčních podmínkách stabilní, není zaznamenán žádný azido-derivát grafenu, dochází k úplné defluoraci a také ke značnému dopování grafenu dusíkem. Vzhledem k značnému uplatnění dusíkem dopovaných grafenů v oblasti energetiky, vybízí tento nález k dalším studiím mechanismu dusíkového dopování a k detailnímu objasnění chemického přostředí atomů dusíku.
