The picture of family in the short stories of Sherman Alexie

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá obrazem rodiny, jak jej ukazuje ve vybraných dílech novodobý indiánský autor Sherman Alexie. Práce analyzuje proměny rodiny ve vybraných Alexieho dílech a zaměřuje se na faktory, které rodinu ovlivňují. Teoretická část práce používá sekundární zdroje k představení přeměny tradiční rodiny v postmoderní jednotku. Samostatná kapitola je věnována historii a představení literatury původního Amerického obyvatelstva. Závěr teoretické části je věnován osobě Shermana Alexieho a hlavním tématům, kterým se ve svých dílech věnuje. Praktická část práce zahrnuje analýzu zobrazení rodiny ve vybraných dílech Shermana Alexieho. Je seřazena podle hlavních témat, se kterými Alexie pracuje a dále práce srovnává Alexieho způsob zobrazení rodiny s názory jeho oponentů. Vzhledem k tomu, že Alexieho dílo se z velké části odehrává v prostědí Spokanské indánské rezervace, nebo ve městě Seattle, analýza praktické části se také věnuje jakým způsobem se liší Alexieho zobrazení rodin žijících v těchto oblastech.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the picture of a Native American family as it is depicted in selected short stories of a contemporary Native American author Sherman Alexie. It analyses the changes of the family in selected Alexie’s works and focuses on the factors that influence these changes. The theoretical part uses the secondary sources to introduce the transoformation of the traditional family into the post-modern unit. A separate chapter is dedicated to the introduction and history of Native American literature. The final chapter of the theoretical part is devoted to the persona of Sherman Alexie from the view of the themes that he uses in his works. The practical part includes an analysis of the portrayal of the family in Alexie’s selected stories. It is arranged by significant topics that appear in Alexie’s literary work and furthemore the work compares Alexie’s perspective of contemporary Native American family with the critique from some of his oponents. As Alexie’s works are primarly set in the enviroment of the Spokane Indian reservation and in the city of Seattle, the thesis analyses the differences of the Native American families in those areas.
