There and Back Again? Analysis of the Causes of Growing Tendencies of Adherence to the Contemporary Paganism. A Case Study of the Situation in the Czech Republic.

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá v českém akademickém prostředí stále poměrně málo reflektovaným tématem současného pohanství a příčinám jeho rostoucí popularity. Představuje kulturně-společenské procesy, které měly na formování současného pohanství vliv, popisuje počátky a vývoj novopohanství ve světě a u nás a následně představuje vlastní kvalitativní výzkum formou narativních rozhovorů s osmi českými pohany. Výzkum odhaluje motivace českých pohanů pro jejich afiliaci k současnému pohanství, kterými jsou především nespokojenost s materialistickým viděním světa, láska k přírodě a také fascinace mytologií. Tyto motivace a charakter současného pohanství následně práce klade do souvislosti s uváděnými společenskými trendy a procesy vedoucími k rozvoji současného pohanství ve světě a ukazuje, že novopohanství představuje zcela typického reprezentanta trendu roztékání, individualizace a synkretizace náboženství. To, čím se odlišuje od jiných nových náboženských hnutí, tedy jakýsi návrat k hodnotám a náboženství předků, je účelným naplněním protestu proti materialismu, konzumerismu a industrializaci, jež představuje typické hodnoty postmodernismu, a jeho atraktivita je rovněž umocňována apelem na uvědomění si historie vlastního národa, krajiny a předků.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on a topic that is still relatively little reflected in the Czech academia – the topic of Contemporary Paganism and the causes of its increasing popularity. It presents culturally-social processes that affected the shaping of Contemporary Paganism, the beginnings and development Paganism worldwide and in the Czech Republic, and consequently introduces a qualitative research through narrative interviews among eight Czech Pagans. The research reveals motivations of these Pagans for their affiliation with Contemporary Paganism which include mostly dissatisfaction with materialistic worldview, love towards nature and also fascination with mythology. These motivations and the character of Contemporary Paganism is then put into context of listed social trends and processes that led to the development of Paganism in the world and it is shown that Paganism constitutes a typical representative of the trend of liquification, individualization and syncretization of religion. The notions that distinguish it from other NRMs, i.e. the “return” to the values and religions of our ancestors, is an effective fulfillment of a protest against materialism, consumerism and industrialization that represents the typical values of postmodernism, and the attractiveness of Contemporary Paganism is also amplified by the appeal of appreciation of the history of one’s nation, landscape and ancestors.
