The relations between the European Union and Canada as a part of external relations of the EU

Abstract:

Disertační práce podrobně analyzuje vztahy mezi ES/EU a Kanadou od dob jednotného evropského aktu až po smlouvu z Nice. Zaměřuje se podrobně na vývoj politických, bezpečnostních i ekonomických vazeb mezi ES/EU a Kanadou, především v souvislosti se změnami zahraniční a bezpečnostní politiky obou partnerů v průběhu tohoto období. Hodnotí uzavřené smlouvy mezi ES/EU a Kanadou a popisuje jejich vzájemné spory. Vztahy Kanady a EU dává do širšího kontextu a porovnává se vztahy EU s USA a dalšími vyspělými zeměmi (Japonskem, Austrálií a Novým Zélandem) a Čínou. Srovnání je provedeno jak z hlediska politické spolupráce (uzavřené dohody, vzájemné spory), tak v oblasti obchodů a investic. Je proveden rozbor složení obchodů a investic a jejich teritoriálního charakteru s ohledem na jednotlivé členské země EU. Ve výsledku tak práce ukazuje, jak přispěly uzavřené obchodní i politické smlouvy mezi EU a Kanadou ke zvýšení vzájemných obchodů. Práce také analyzuje hlavní evropské vlivy na kanadskou kulturu a identitu a popisuje společné hodnoty, na kterých je transatlantické partnerství budováno.

Abstract:

The dissertation thesis analyzes the relations between the European Community/European Union (EC/EU) and Canada in the period from the Single European Act to the Treaty of Nice. It focuses on the political, security, business and cultural relations between the abovementioned partners. It reviews contracted agreements between the EU and Canada and describes mutual disputes in relations. It also tries to place the relations between the EU and Canada into broader context and compares Canadian-EC/EU relations with the EC/EU-U.S.A, Japan, China, Australia and New Zealand relations. The comparison is done both in terms of political cooperation (contracted agreements, mutual disputes) and in trade and investment. It analyzes the composition of trade and investment and their territorial nature with regard to individual EU member states. As a result, the work shows how contracted business and political agreements between the EU and Canada contributed to increase of mutual trade. It also analyzes the major European influence on Canadian culture and identity, and describes the common values on which the transatlantic partnership is built.
