Identity of the Czech compatriots in Gernik (Romanian Banat)

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá etnickou identitou Čechů žijících ve vesnici Gerník v jižní oblasti rumunského Banátu. Cílem práce je zjistit subjektivní etnickou identitu, tedy názory jednotlivců na to, kým se cítí být, s čím se identifikují, jak a podle čeho se češství určuje, kdo se může stát Čechem a kdo jím už není. Pozornost je tedy věnována zejména mechanismům, které slouží k udržování české identity. Součástí je i pojednání o postoji k jazyku a jeho výuce a zároveň užití češtiny/rumunštiny ve vztahu k majoritní populaci. V práci je zahrnuta rovněž problematika myšlenkových stereotypů příslušníků českého etnika, pomocí nichž se krajané vymezují od ostatního obyvatelstva. Vliv na identitu má také kulturní symbolika, která hraje u krajanů důležitou roli a pomocí níž manifestují a udržují svoji identitu navenek. Celá práce se opírá o vlastní empirický výzkum prováděný v oblasti jižního Banátu.

Abstract:

This bachelor work deals with the ethnic identity of Czech people in one Romanian village named Gernik. I will try to find out the subjective ethnic identity, thus, how the individuals have ideas of that, who they identify. How and with reference to what Czech national identity is determined, who is the Czech and who is not? Thus, the attention is paid to the mechanisms especially, which serves to maintain Czech identity. I will also deal with attitude to language and schooling and applied Czech/Romanian language in relation to the majority population. This work focuses on the problems of the stereotypes of the Czech ethnic group, according to which the compatriots vary from the rest of the population. The influence on the identity has cultural symbolism too, which plays important role in relation to compatriots. Thus, the people illustrate and maintain their identity on the outside. The whole work bases on the own empirical research, which was realized in the area of southern Banat.
