The Use of Edmodo in Czech Secondary Schools as Regards Students' Motivation for and Quality of Homework

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá, zda použití virtuálního výukového prostředí, Edmodo, poskytuje lepší pracovní prostředí a zvyšuje motivaci studentů středních škol k vypracování jejich domácích úkolů. Také zkoumá, zda má toto prostředí vliv na kvalitu těchto domácích úkolů. První, teoretická část této práce se zaměřuje na tyto oblasti: domácí úkol, studenti 21. století, motivace k dělání domácích úkolů, a Edmodo jako nástroj. Po definování domácího úkolu jsou uvedeny nejobvyklejší způsoby vnímání tohoto fenoménu mezi experty, studenty a rodiči. Dál jsou definovány charakteristické rysy studentů Generace Z. V následující části se tato práce zabývá motivací a jejím spojením s domácími úkoly. Je zkoumán vzájemný vliv úkolů a motivace k učení a také zda studenti potřebují motivaci k tomu, aby dokončili svůj domácí úkol. Poslední část se zabývá samotným nástrojem Edmodo. Praktická část této práce se zaměřuje na popis metodologie výzkumu, který byl vykonán na české střední škole v Brně. Jsou zde take uvedeny cíle výzkumu, detail o účastnících a design výzkumu. Poté jsou prezentovány dosažené výsledky.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on whether the use of the virtual learning environment Edmodo provides a better working environment and motivation for secondary school learners to do their homework, and whether this has any impact on the quality of students’ homework. The first, theoretical part of the thesis focuses on these areas: homework, 21st century students, blended learning, motivation in regards of homework, and Edmodo as a tool. After a definition of homework is provided the thesis details the most common perceptions of homework among the experts, students, and parents in general. A definition and traits of Generation Z learners are described before the problematic homework facilitating practices from the point of view of the Generation Z students and their mentality are considered. Motivation and its connection to homework is covered in the following part. The impact of homework on students’ motivation for learning and vice versa, and whether students need motivation in order to complete their homework is examined. The last area of the focus is on Edmodo itself. Reasons for choosing it as a platform for assigning and facilitating homework are suggested. The empirical part of the work focuses on the methodology of the research that was carried out at a Czech secondary school in Brno. The research objectives, the participants and also the research design are detailed. The results accomplished through the research are then presented. The overall aim of this thesis is to explore the role of homework as a 21st century learning experience. In addition, possible options of how the home assignment can be assigned and adapted for the Gen Z students in order to fulfil its two roles described above are considered.
