The English-Speaking Countries in English Language Teaching at Lower-Secondary Level

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá rolí reálií anglicky mluvících zemí ve výuce anglického jazyka na druhém stupni základních škol v České republice. Teoretická část vymezuje pojmy, jako jsou kultura, interkulturní kompetence a identitu a zároveň uvádí zařazení reálií na úrovni kurikulárních dokumentů. Popisuje metody, včetně přístupu CLIL. Empirická část kombinuje kvantitativní dotazníkové šetření a kvalitativní rozhovory s učiteli angličtiny. Cílem bylo zjistit, jak učitelé s reáliemi anglicky mluvících zemí pracují ve své výuce anglického jazyka. Pro dosažení cíle byly vytvořeny výzkumné otázky. Výsledky ukazují, že většina učitelů pravidelně zařazuje reálie do výuky prostřednictvím učebnic, online materiálů a autentických zdrojů. Nejčastěji se zaměřují na historii, geografii, tradice a každodenní život v anglicky mluvících zemích. Reálie jsou, podle učitelů, vnímány jako efektivní nástroj pro motivaci žáků a rozvoj jejich interkulturní kompetence. Výzkum sděluje, že reálie obohacují jazykové vzdělávání a pomáhají žákům lépe porozumět kulturnímu kontextu cílového jazyka. Závěrem přináší doporučení pro větší podporu učitelů.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the role of English-speaking countries' cultural studies in teaching English at lower-secondary level in the Czech Republic. The theoretical part defines concepts such as culture, intercultural competence, and identity while presenting the inclusion of cultural studies at the level of curricular documents. It describes methods, including the CLIL approach. The empirical part combines a quantitative questionnaire survey and qualitative interviews with English teachers. The aim was to find out how teachers work with English-speaking countries' cultural studies in their English language teaching. Research questions were created to achieve the goal. The results show that most teachers regularly include cultural studies in teaching through textbooks, online materials, and authentic sources. They often focus on history, geography, traditions, and everyday life in English-speaking countries. According to teachers, cultural studies is perceived as an effective tool for motivating students and developing their intercultural competence. The research reveals that cultural studies enriches language education and helps students better understand the cultural context of the target language. Finally, it makes recommendations for greater support for teachers.
