Changes in migration of gammarids in relation to selected environmental factors

Abstract:

Within this Diploma thesis I studied the impact of selected environmental factors on the migration activity of Gammarus fossarum. More specifically, I focused on the impact of fish presence and light intensity on migration rate, as well as on some migration characteristics (developmental stage, direction of the migration). The study was conducted in the vicinity of the city of Brno at two environmentally comparable streams that differed only in the presence of fish. Two experimental designs were realized in the field (Day, Twilight), in order to evaluate the effect of light intensity on migration of gammarids, which has been videotaped. During the Twilight the migration of gammarids was lower at the stream with fish compared to the fishless stream, as is probably induced by the expected predation pressure of fish. During the day, the migration activity of gammarids on the fishless stream was significantly affected by the light intensity, as well as by the distance to shore. On the other hand, none of the studied environmental factors showed a significant effect on the generally low migration rate at the stream with fish. The same results were obtained also for the migration activity of adults and juveniles. Interestingly, the migration of adults prevailed above the juveniles at the fishless stream, while there was no difference between the migration of adults and juveniles at the stream with fish. Despite the above-mentioned differences in migration activity of gammarids, the proportion of upstream migration at dusk at both streams was very similar.

Abstract:

V diplomové práci byl studován vliv vybraných faktorů prostředí na migrační aktivitu druhu Gammarus fossarum, konkrétně vliv přítomnosti ryb a intenzity světla na migraci, přičemž byl sledován i charakter této migrační aktivity (stádium, směr migrace). Výzkum byl realizován nedaleko města Brna na dvou malých vodních tocích s porovnatelnými parametry, přičemž tyto toky se lišili především v přítomnosti ryb. V terénu byli uskutečněny dva různé dizajny experimentu (Den, Soumrak), aby bylo možné vyhodnotit vliv různé intenzity světla na migraci blešivců, která byla zaznamenávána na videozáznam. Z výsledků vyplynulo, že na toku s rybami byla během Soumraku migrační aktivita blešivců nižší než na toku bez ryb, což by mohlo souviset s predačním tlakem nebo jen samotnou přítomností ryb, na kterou blešivci reagují. Z měřených faktorů prostředí, zaznamenaných v dizajnu Den, ovlivňovala statisticky významně na toku bez ryb intenzitu migrace blešivců zejména intenzita světla. Na toku bez ryb byl zaznamenaný i vliv vzdálenosti k břehu na abundanci blešivců. Na toku s rybami se žádný sledovaný abiotický faktor neukázal jako významný, dokonce ani intenzita světla. Jistý rozdíl byl zaznamenán i v migrační aktivitě adultních a juvenilních jedinců. Na toku bez ryb výrazně převažovala migrace adultů, zatímco na toku s rybami nebyl během Dne rozdíl v migraci adultů a juvenilů signifikantní. I přes výše zmíněné rozdíly v migrační aktivitě blešivců byla intenzita migrace proti proudu během Soumraku na obou tocích velmi podobná.
