Modern Face of London: Contemporary Trends in Architecture

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with modern architectural styles in the British capital London. The work is divided into three parts and depicts significant styles since the 1980s - postmodernism, high rise and the last part is devoted to the trend of sustainability. Each chapter introduces the style and describes its most prominent examples in the city. The thesis also examines the gradual development of the architecture and clarifies the facts that led to the construction of modern buildings in the historical City. The chapter on sustainability describes London as a city of green architecture and this statement is supported by a study of three BREEAM rated buildings. The aim of this thesis is to provide an overview of the modern architecture of London and to indicate that sustainability is a direction that London should take.

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá moderními architektonickými směry v britském hlavní městě Londýně. Práce, která je rozdělena na tři části, popisuje nejvýraznější směry od 80. let 20. století - postmodernu, trend výškových budov a poslední část se věnuje trendu udržitelnosti v architektuře. Každá z kapitol představí jednotlivý směr a popíše nejvýraznější zástupce ve městě. Práce se také zabývá postupným vývojem architektury a popisuje skutečnosti, které vedly k výstavbě moderních budov v historickém centru City. Zmíněná kapitola o udržitelnosti popisuje Londýn jako město zelené architektury a toto tvrzení je podpořeno studií třech budov s hodnocením BREEAM. Celkový cíl práce je poskytnout přehled architektury moderního Londýna a ukázat, že udržitelnost je směr, kterým by se měl London ubírat.
