Possibilities of using BMI for the evaluation of body weight and body composition of boys of older school age

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je analyzovat zastoupení tělesného tuku hodnoceného pomocí Bioelektrické impedanční analýzy (BIA) v různých percentilových hladinách růstových grafů pro hodnocení Body Mass Indexu (BMI) a posoudit výpovědní hodnotu těchto grafů pro hodnocení tělesné hmotnosti. Měření se zúčastnilo 525 chlapců ve věku od 11 do 15 let. K měření tělesné výšky a hmotnosti byl použit Stadiometer InBody 370 BSM. Na základě tělesné výšky a hmotnosti se stanovilo BMI. Dle hodnot BMI nastalo zařazení do percentilových hladin růstového grafu. Hodnocení BMI dle percentilu bylo: podváha (P1) <10, proporcionální (P2) 25-75, nadváha (P3) 75-90, obezita (P4) >90.Tělesné složení bylo stanoveno pomocí Bioelektrické impedanční analýzy InBody 770. Poté došlo k porovnání somatických parametrů mezi sousedícími kategoriemi hmotnostního statusu. Pro posouzení statistické významnosti rozdílů somatických parametrů mezi sousedními percentilovými pásmy byl použit parametrický independent t-test a neparametrický Mann - Whitney test. Věcná významnost byla zjištěna pomocí Cohenova d. K určení velikosti efektu neparametrického testu bylo vypočítáno r. Výsledky ukázaly statisticky významný rozdíl u somatických parametrů chlapců ve věku 11 a 12 let. Ve věkové kategorii 13 a 14 let u skupin P1 vs P2 a P2 vs P3 nebyly statistické rozdíly mezi procentem tělesného tuku a viscerálním tukem signifikantní. U 15letých nebyl statisticky signifikantní rozdíl procenta tělesného tuku a viscerálního tuku mezi P1 a P2, P3 a P4.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the representation of body fat assessed by Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) in different percentile levels of growth charts for Body Mass Index (BMI) assessment and to assess the predictive value of these charts for body weight assessment. A total of 525 boys aged 11 to 15 years participated in the measurement. The InBody 370 BSM stadiometer was used to measure body height and weight. Based on the body height and weight, BMI was determined. According to the BMI values, classification into percentile levels of growth chart occurred. The BMI percentile scores were: underweight (P1) <10, proportional (P2) 25-75, overweight (P3) 75-90, obese (P4) >90.Body composition was determined using InBody 770 Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis. Somatic parameters were then compared between adjacent weight status categories. The parametric independent t-test and the nonparametric Mann - Whitney test were used to assess the statistical significance of differences in somatic parameters between adjacent percentile bands. The effect size of the parametric test was determined using Cohen's d. To determine the effect size of the nonparametric test, r was calculated. The results showed a statistically significant difference for somatic parameters of boys aged 11 and 12 years. At the ages of 13 and 14 years, for the P1 vs P2 and P2 vs P3 groups, the statistical differences between body fat percentage and visceral fat were not significant. At 15 years of age, there was no statistically significant difference in percent body fat and visceral fat between P1 vs P2, P3 vs P4.
