The Particle Swarm Algorithm PSO and Demonstration of Its Properties

Abstract:

Many scientific tasks involve optimization of a set of parameters. For instance, deployment of resources in order to maximize income in economics or training neural networks to recognize images of people's faces. Numerous algorithms were proposed to solve optimization problems, some of them more successful than others. This thesis presents a relatively new optimization technique - the PSO algorithm, which employs an interaction among members of a swarm. The main focus is on an implementation, which allows the user to monitor behavior of the algorithm by visualizing its different aspects. The program visualizes the movement of the particles in the search space and the movement of a single particle during all the iterations of the algorithm. In addition, it shows convergence of the best values found. The thesis also presents results of a few demonstrative runs of the algorithms along with their interpretation. Together with the visualization, this allows better intuitive understanding of the parameters of the algorithm.

Abstract:

Množstvo vedeckých úloh zahŕňa optimalizáciu množiny parametrov. Napríklad rozmiestnenie zdrojov za účelom maximalizácie zisku v ekonomike, alebo trénovanie neurónových sietí na rozpoznávanie ľudských tvárí. Bolo navrhnutých mnoho viac alebo menej úspešných algoritmov na~riešenie optimalizačných problémov. Táto práca predstavuje jednu relatívne novú optimalizačnú techniku - algoritmus PSO, využívajúci interakciu častíc roja. Dôraz je kladený na implementáciu, ktorá umožňuje sledovať správanie algoritmu pomocou vizualizácie jeho rôznych aspektov. Program zobrazuje pohyb častíc v priestore a pohyb jednej častice počas všetkých iterácií algoritmu. Navyše graficky zobrazuje konvergenciu nájdených hodnôt. V práci sú uvedené výsledky niekoľkých demonštratívnych behov algoritmu aj s ich interpretáciou, čo spolu s vizualizáciou umožňuje lepšie intuitívne pochopenie významu jednotlivých premenných algoritmu.
