Homosexuality: Biology versus Choice

Abstract:

Tato práce se věnuje nastínění problematiky diskurzu homosexuality v kontextu dnešní euro-americké společnosti, zejména názorový střet mezi diskurzem biologie a volby. Cílem je identifikovat argumenty, které jednotliví mluvčí diskurzů využívají a možnosti, které tyto argumenty naznačují pro budoucí vývoj. Důraz je kladen zejména na kontrast obou typů promluv, který je ilustrován na historickém vývoji uvažování homosexuality od raných kultur až po současnou emancipační diskusi v boji jedinců s homosexuální orientací o svá práva a jejich oponentů, kteří čerpají z politického pamfletu „The Gay Agenda“. Hlavním bodem práce je pak důkladná analýza vybraných videí, volně dostupných na internetovém portálu www.youtube.com, která reprezentují reakci na tuto veřejnou diskusi na úrovni každodenní reality. Závěry této práce naznačují, že dochází k prolnutí obou diskurzivních proudů a proměně vnímání homosexuality v prostoru euro-americké společnosti, které s sebou na individuální rovině nese i důležité implikace pro změnu identity jedinců, kteří sebe sami identifikují za homosexuální.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is aimed at addressing and examining important issues related to a discourse upon homosexuality within the context of contemporary Euro-American society, in particular conflicting opinions regarding the biological discourse upon homosexuality and the discourse upon homosexuality as a choice. The thesis is designed to identify central arguments advanced by individual representatives of both of these discourses as well as investigate possibilities of the future development suggested by those arguments. A considerable emphasis is placed upon presenting a contrast between both types of the discourses. This is illustrated by tracing the historical development of thinking about homosexuality from ancient cultures to a contemporary discussion associated with the struggle between individuals with homosexual orientation striving for emancipation and establishing their rights and their opponents who draw upon a political pamphlet entitled The Gay Agenda. The main part of the thesis is concerned with a thorough analysis of selected videos, all of which are freely accessible on YouTube, representing reactions to the above mentioned public discussion on the level of everyday reality. The conclusions reached in this thesis point to the fact that both discourses tend to be interwoven and the perception of homosexuality in Euro-American society is being transformed, which carries significant implications for the individual, as the identity of those who identify themselves as homosexual may change.
