Breathing exercises in practical speech therapy

Abstract:

Logopedie jako věda v českém prostředí existuje jen přibližně šest desítek let. Oddělila se od věd lékařských a jako věda se vydala zpočátku striktně samostatnou cestou. Přestože v období posledních patnácti let již mnozí autoři logopedii vnímají jako vědu, která by měla být interdisciplinární, část svého paradigmatu si logopedické zkoumání i praxe zachovávají ještě z doby svého vzniku. Dobře viditelný je tento stav zejména ve vazbě logopedie a dechových cvičení. Dech je základem tvorby hlasu, hlas je základem řeči. Předpokladem správné řeči je vhodný způsob dýchání. Logopedická teorie i praxe si toto uvědomují a dechová cvičení doporučují i s nimi pracují. Po vědecké rovině však dechová cvičení v logopedii stojí poněkud stranou. Smyslem této práce proto je využít teoretických poznatků nejen logopedie, ale především příbuzných oborů fonologie, foniatrie a fyzioterapie k provedení experimentu, jenž by jednak potvrdil přínos použití dechových cvičení v logopedii a jednak ukázal způsoby, jakými by tato měla být prováděna. Experiment spočíval v provádění každodenních dechových cvičení o dobu osmi týdnů u dětí předškolního věku s narušenou komunikační schopností i intaktních. Přínos dechových cvičení se u zúčastněných subjektů prokázal zejména s ohledem na zlepšení dechové ekonomie i výzkumníkům poskytl cenná doporučení pro další praxi či vědecké bádání.

Abstract:

Speech therapy in terms of a science exists in the Czech Republic for around six decades. It has split from medical science and decided to follow strictly standalone path in the field of special education. Despite of the shift towards interdisciplinarity which surfaced among several authors in the past 15 years, there is a certain part of speech therapy's paradigm still unchallenged from the early days such as the connection between speech therapy and breathing exercises. Breath is one of the requirements for producing voice, voice is one of the fundaments of speech. The right way of breathing is one of the requirements for technically correct speech. Speech therapy practice and theory are aware and are routinely recommending and applying breathing exercises. But speaking of speech therapy as a science, there we get a different picture: Breathing exercises are neglected. The goal of this paper therefore is to use theoretical knowledge not only coming from speech therapy itself, but also from related sciences such as phonology, phoniatrics and physical therapy, to execute an experiment to confirm the benefits of breathing exercises in speech therapy and to show some of the ways of implementation of breathing exercises into speech therapy practice. The experiment was based on eight weeks of everyday breathing exercises in two groups of children 56 years old one consisting of children with communicative disability and one of intact children. The experiment confirmed the benefit of breathing exercises to these children especially in connection to breathing economy and also offered valuable recommendations for the researcher's future practice and research.
