The Influence of Nationalism on the Process of Democratic Transition of Slovakia (1992-1998)

Abstract:

Focus of this bachelor thesis is to analyze the effects of nationalism on the process of democratic transition of Slovakia in the years 1992-1998. Its subject is the nature of nationalistic tendencies and their realization by political elites, with particular focus on HZDS and SNS – parties that constituted the core of ruling parliamentary coalitions during this era (1992 – March 1994 and October 1994 – 1998). This thesis acknowledges that nationalism, as an independent variable, was not the only factor affecting the process of implementation of democratic principles. Its research question is: was nationalism only an instrument of legitimization of semi-authoritarian regime, or did it occur also in a form that acted as a support of democratization. As a theoretical background, this thesis uses theory of nationalism by Kohn and Auer and particularly constructivist theory of Brubaker and Hechter, while main instrument of operationalization is theory of cleavages by Stein Rokkan.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa zameriava na analýzu vplyvu nacionalizmu na proces demokratickej tranzície Slovenska v období od roku 1992 do 1998. Predmetom práce je povaha nacionalistických tendencií a ich realizácia politickými elitami, dôrazom na HZDS a SNS, ktoré tvorili jadro vládnych koalícií. (1992 - marec 1994, október 1994 - 1998). Do úvahy je potrebné vziať skutočnosť, že nacionalizmus ako závislá premenná nie je jedinou hodnotou, ktorá ovplyvňovala proces implementácie demokratických princípov. Výskumná otázka bakalárskej práce znie, či bol nacionalizmus v danom kontexte len prostriedkom legitimizácie poloautoritatívneho režimu, alebo či sa naopak vyskytol aj v takej podobe, ktorá slúži ako opora demokracie. Práca vyžíva téorie nacionalizmu Kohna a Auera, ale najmä konštuktivistickú téoriu Brubakera a Hechtera, pričom nástrojom práce je teória cleavages Steina Rokkana.
