Measurement of shielding efficiency of polymer and carbonaceous composites

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou stínění elektromagnetického rušení (EMI). V teoretické části jsou popsány základní fyzikální vztahy pro elektromagnetické záření a stínící účinnost (SE) a diskutovány příspěvky permitivity, permeability a elektrické vodivosti prostředí k SE. Dále jsou zde představeny zdroje EMI, a metody a přístroje pro měření EMI. EMI v teoretické části je rozděleno na vyzařované emise a vedené emise. Značná část teorie se věnuje testování elektromagnetické odolnosti zařízení, tj. schopnosti přístroje pracovat v podmínkách intenzivního zdroje elektromagnetického záření. Jsou zde také diskutovány metody eliminace EMI a dále způsoby měření SE. Hlavní důraz je kladen zejména na měření SE pomocí vlnovodné metody, která byla použita v rámci diplomové práce a je zmíněna a detailně diskutována v praktické části. Na závěr teoretické části je představena materiálová základna, která se využívá v oblasti vývoje moderních štítů elektromagnetického záření. Poslední kapitola se věnuje rozrůstajícímu se odvětví ohebné a nositelné elektroniky, která využívá pokroků v oblasti vývoje moderních štítů EMI. V praktické části jsou pak blíže specifikovány materiály, jejichž SE byla testována. Použity byly nanostrukturované elektricky vodivé částice, zejména polypyrrolové nanotrubky, expandovaný grafit, a uhlíkové částice Vulcan Carbon, Carbon Pearl a SuperP. Je zde popsána příprava ohebných štítů EMI na bázi kompozitů vodivých nanočástic a polydimethylsiloxanu, včetně jejich úpravy pro dané podmínky měření. Součástí experimentu je rovněž popis testovací stanice využívající síťového vektorového analyzátoru, která byla použita pro měření. Uvedeny jsou i metody její kalibrace. Zevrubně jsou rovněž diskutovány použité vlnovody, jejich vlastnosti a pracovní frekvence. Velkou část praktické části diplomové práce pak tvoří shrnutí a diskuze výsledků měření SE vybraných vzorků, výpočty příspěvků reflexe, transmise a absorpce k celkové SE a v neposlední řadě i diskuze vlivu tloušťky štítu na SE.

Abstract:

This Master thesis deals with the issue of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. The theoretical part describes the basic physical relationships for electromagnetic radiation and shielding effectiveness (SE) and discusses the contributions of permittivity, permeability, and electrical conductivity of the medium to SE. It also introduces sources of EMI, and methods and instruments for EMI measurement. EMI in the theoretical part is divided into radiated emissions and conducted emissions. A significant part of the theory is devoted to the testing of the electromagnetic immunity of equipment, i.e., the ability of the equipment to operate under conditions of intense electromagnetic radiation from source. Methods of eliminating EMI are also discussed, as well as methods of measuring SE. In particular, the main focus is on the measurement of SE using the waveguide method, which was used in the thesis and is mentioned and discussed in detail in the experimental section. At the end of the theoretical part, the material base used in the development of modern electromagnetic radiation shields is presented. The last chapter is devoted to the growing field of flexible and wearable electronics, which takes advantage of the advances in the development of modern EMI shields. In the experimental section, the materials whose SE was tested are specified in more detail. Nanostructured electrically conductive particles were used, in particular polypyrrole nanotubes, expanded graphite, and carbonaceous particles Vulcan Carbon, Carbon Pearl and SuperP. The preparation of flexible EMI shields based on composites of conductive nanoparticles and polydimethylsiloxane is described, including their modification for the given measurement conditions. The experiment also includes a description of the test station using a vector network analyzer that was used for the measurements. Methods for its calibration are also given. The waveguides used, their properties and operating frequencies are also discussed in detail. A large part of the experimental section of the thesis consists of a summary and discussion of the results of the SE measurements of the selected samples, calculations of the contributions of reflection, transmission and absorption to the overall SE and, last but not least, a discussion of the influence of the shield thickness on the SE.
