Influence of Age Effect in selected sports

Abstract:

Problematika nejčastěji označována jako Relative Age Effect (RAE) se zabývá vlivem chronologického věku na biologický stupeň individuálního vývoje. Zejména v období pubescence jsou v některých znacích (antropometrické, silové atd.) znatelné rozdíly mezi jedinci narozenými na začátku, resp. na konci téhož roku. Sportovci narození na začátku roku jsou často označováni jako sportovně talentovaní, avšak mnohdy (nevědomě) pouze využívají dočasných výhod plynoucích z jejich data narození. Cílem práce bylo analyzovat vliv RAE u reprezentačních výběrů v tenisu (U14, chlapci a dívky), fotbalu (U15–U21, A-tým, chlapci/muži) a ledním hokeji (účastníci mistrovství světa, muži). Pro posouzení vlivu RAE byl z důvodu nominálního charakteru výzkumných dat použit chí-kvadrát test (2) ve variantě dobré shody. Z důvodů záměrného charakteru výběru prvků výzkumných souborů byl pro posouzení věcné významnosti hodnot 2 testu použit výpočet věcné významnosti w a test poměr šancí. Z hlediska věcné významnosti (ES) byl u souboru tenistů v celém výzkumném období (2012–2016) prokázán velký efekt vlivu RAE (w = 0,68), a to i v dělení podle hráčských nominací (w = 0,61–0,75). U souboru tenistek byl v celém výzkumném období (2012–2016) prokázán střední efekt vlivu RAE (w = 0,44) a střední až velký efekt (w = 0,38–0,54) v dělení podle hráčských nominací. U fotbalistů se v jednotlivých věkových kategoriích pohybovala úroveň ES v rozmezí malého (w = 0,28; A-tým) až velkého efektu vlivu RAE (w = 0,68; U15). U hokejistů byl v celém zkoumaném období (2015–2017) zjištěn malý efekt vlivu RAE (w = 0,22), střední efekt (w = 0,30) u brankářů, malý efekt u obránců (w = 0,15) i útočníků (w = 0,24). S ohledem na zjištěné poznatky o vlivu RAE by měli být s touto problematikou a jejími možnými důsledky seznámeni nejen pedagogičtí pracovníci podílející se na tréninkovém procesu při práci se sportovní mládeží.

Abstract:

The issue most commonly referred as the Relative Age Effect (RAE) deals with the influence of chronological age on the biological stage of individual development. Especially in the period of pubescence in some characters (anthropometric, muscle strength, etc.) there are noticeable differences between individuals born at the beginning of the year and at the end of the same year. Athletes born at the beginning of the year are often marked as talented athletes, but often (unknowingly) they only benefit from the temporary benefits of their date of birth. The aim of the work was to analyze the influence of the RAE in the national tennis teams (U14, boys and girls), football (U15–U21, A-team, boys/men) and ice hockey (world championship participants, men). Due to the nominal character of the research data, was used the chi-square test (2, Goodness-of-fit variant). Due to the intentional nature of the research data sets, was also used the effect size w and the odds ratio test to assess the effect size significance of the 2 test values. In terms of effect size a large effect (w = 0.68) of the RAE influence was demonstrated in the tennis players throughout the research period (2012–2016), even in division by player nominations (w = 0.61–0.75). Troughout all the research period (2012–2016) at girls tennis players was found medium effect size of the RAE (w = 0.44) and medium to large effect size at division by players nominations (w = 0.38–0.54). For football players in each age category was found small (w = 0.28, A-team) to large (w = 0.68; U15) influence of the RAE. Throughout the research period (2015–2017) was found for all hockey players small (w = 0.22) effect size, a moderate effect (w = 0.30) for goalies, a small effect (w = 0.15) for defensemens and also small (w = 0.24) effect for forwards. Taking into the consideration the above findings regarding the RAE effect, this problematic and it's possible consequences should be well known not only by the pedagogical staff involved in the training process with youth atlethes.
