Evaluation of gasping in basic life support

Abstract:

The following work deals with the issue of gasping, especially from the perspective of students. It often happens in practice that even healthcare professionals with many years of experience cannot recognize gasping when faced with it. Therefore, if we look deeper, the problem may already occur during the study, and students do not pay as much attention to the issue of gasping as it deserves. Therefore, in our research, we turned to students of Czech and Slovak Universities studying medical departments to find out what they actually know about gasping. We compiled a questionnaire, which consisted of both theoretical and audiovisual questions, and through it we examined whether the respondents master the theory of what gasping actually means, as well as the practical side, or whether they can correctly recognize gasping on the videos. The questionnaire was distributed in two stages - before teaching the subject of first aid and after its completion, in order to find out how much information the respondents took from this subject. The results of our research were pleasantly surprising, because more than half of the students encountered the term gasping before teaching first aid. After completing the course, their number was much larger, and it can be said that most respondents knew how to correctly theoretically define gasping and practically determine it in the videos. These findings lead us to the conclusion that no matter how well students are prepared to practice, over time, knowledge that they do not actively use will fade. In the recognition of gasping in practice, regular retraining of all healthcare professionals, which is not implemented in many hospitals, could help.

Abstract:

Nasledúca práca sa zaoberá problematikou gaspingu, najmä z pohľadu študentov. Čas-to sa v praxi stáva, že aj zdravotnícki pracovníci s dlhoročnou praxou nevedia rozpoznať gasping, keď mu stoja zoči-voči. Preto, ak pátráme hlbšie, možno problém nastáva už pri štúdiu, a študenti nevenujú problematike gaspingu takú pozornosť, ako by si zaslúžila. Preto sme sa v našom výskume obrátili na študentov českých a slovenských vy-sokých škôl, študujúcich zdravotnícke odbory, aby sme zistili, čo vlastne vedia o gaspingu. Zostavili sme dotazník, ktorý sa skladal ako aj z teoretických otázok, tak aj z otázok s audiovizuálnym charakterom, a prostredníctvom neho sme skúmali, či respondenti ovládajú teóriu, čo vlastne gasping znamená, aj praktickú stránku, či zvládnu na daných videách gasping správne rozpoznať. Dotazník bol distribuovaný ve dvoch etapách, pred výukou predmetu prvá pomoc a po jeho ukončení, aby sme zistili koľko informácií si respondenti odniesli z tohoto predmetu. Výsledky nášho výskumu milo prekvapili, pretože, viac ako polovica študentov sa stretla s pojmom gasping už pred výukou predmetu prvej pomoci. Po absolvovaní predmetu bolo ich množstvo značne väčšie, a dá sa povedať, že väčšina respondentov vedela správne teoreticky definovať gasping aj ho prakticky určiť na snímkach. Tieto zistenia nás privádzajú k záveru, že akokoľvek dobre sú študenti pripravení do praxe, časom, vedomosti, ktoré aktívne nevyuživajú vyblednú. V rozpoznávaní gaspingu v praxi, by možno pomohlo pravidelné preškolovanie všetkých zdravotnických pracovníkov, ktoré sa vo veľa nemocniciach nerealizuje.
