The face as a medium: facial modifications between culture, identity, and art

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá úpravami obličeje jako komplexním kulturním, identitním a uměleckým fenoménem. Cílem práce je zmapovat, jakými způsoby lidé napříč různými kulturami, historickými epochami a uměleckými kontexty zacházeli s tváří jako médiem - prostředkem, skrze nějž se vyjednávají otázky identity, společenského statusu, genderu, spirituality a estetiky. Teoretická část práce je strukturována do čtyř kapitol. První kapitola analyzuje standardy krásy v různých kulturních kontextech (Asie, Afrika, Evropa a Amerika), tradiční a rituální praktiky úprav obličeje u vybraných etnik (Yorubové, Maorové, Inuité, Mursi, Kayapo), úpravy obličeje v subkulturách (punk, black metal, drag queens) a psychologické motivace vedoucí ke změnám vzhledu. Druhá kapitola se věnuje tváři jako uměleckému prostředku a analyzuje tvorbu umělců pracujících s vlastním obličejem jako médiem, zejména ORLAN, Leigha Boweryho, Mariny Abramović a Natalije Goncharovové. Třetí kapitola mapuje současné tendence digitálních úprav obličeje a jejich vliv na vnímání vlastní identity. Čtvrtá kapitola sleduje historický vývoj make-upu od starověku po 20. století. Praktická část práce má podobu dvou krátkých videí: první, performativního charakteru, vizuálně zpracovává postupnou deformaci identity prostřednictvím make-upu, druhé má formu narativního minifilmu, který prostřednictvím osobní výpovědi autorky reflektuje tlak na ideál ženské krásy v kontextu sociálních sítí a proces hledání vlastní identity.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis examines facial modifications as a complex cultural, identity-related and artistic phenomenon. The aim of the thesis is to explore the ways in which people across different cultures, historical periods and artistic contexts have treated the face as a medium - a means through which questions of identity, social status, gender, spirituality and aesthetics are negotiated. The theoretical part is divided into four chapters. The first chapter analyses beauty standards across different cultural contexts (Asia, Africa, Europe and America), traditional and ritual facial modification practices among selected ethnic groups (Yoruba, M?ori, Inuit, Mursi, Kayapo), facial modifications within subcultures (punk, black metal, drag queens) and the psychological motivations behind changes in appearance. The second chapter focuses on the face as an artistic tool and analyses the work of artists who use their own faces as a medium, particularly ORLAN, Leigh Bowery, Marina Abramović and Natalia Goncharova. The third chapter maps current trends in digital facial modifications and their impact on self-perception and identity. The fourth chapter traces the historical development of make-up from antiquity to the 20th century. The practical part of the thesis consists of two short videos: the first, performative in character, visually captures the gradual deformation of identity through make-up; the second takes the form of a short narrative film in which the author reflects on the pressure of beauty ideals in the context of social media and the process of searching for one's own identity.
