Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce se zaobírá vlivem vězení na hnutí a ideologie Black Power, odrážející se v pracích uvězněných černošských aktivistů. První část práce vyobrazuje vězení jako součást širšího systému útlaku a jako nástroj politické a společenské kontroly. Na druhé straně je vězení zobrazeno jako potenciální místo osobního znovuzrození vězně. Práce nabízí krátký komentář o hnutí Black Power sloužící jako teoretické pozadí analýzy konkrétních děl. Druhá část práce pojednává o vězeňských textech z různých úhlů pohledu jako o nástrojích, produktech a symbolech hnutí za svobodu a ukazuje jejich použití jakožto prostoru na osobní reimaginaci a tvorbu identity autora. Důraz je kladen na sebeidentifakaci autora s pozicí politického vězně a revolucionáře. Poslední část analyzuje tři vybrané autobiografické vězenské texty – Soul on Ice Eldridge Cleavera, Soledad Brother George Jacksona a Autobiografii Angely Davisové.

Abstract:

The object of the thesis is to discuss the influence of prison on the Black Power movement and ideologies as reflected in the prison writings of imprisoned black activists. The first part of the thesis is concerned with prison as a part of a larger system of oppression and an instrument of social and political control. Prison is, however, also shown to have the potential of becoming a site of personal rebirth of the prisoner. A brief commentary is offered on the Black Power movement which serves as a background to the analysis of concrete narratives. The second part of the thesis deals with prison narratives from a variety of angles as tools, products and symbols of the freedom struggle, and shows how they were used as space for the writers’ personal re-imagination and identity construction. Emphasis is put on the writers’ self-identification as political prisoners and revolutionaries. In the final part, three selected autobiographical prison narratives are analyzed – Eldridge Cleaver’s Soul on Ice, George Jackson’s Soledad Brother and Angela Davis’ Autobiography.
