Specifics of horse transport

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce poskytuje souhrnné poznatky z oblasti přepravy koní. První část se zaměřuje na literární přehled, který zahrnuje historii přepravy koní, způsoby přepravy koní, legislativu, požadavky na přepravu, metody navykání koně na přepravu, zásady manipulace s koněm během přepravy a fyziologii stresové reakce. Právě fyziologie stresu je oblastí, kterou se tato práce zabývá detailněji, jelikož poskytuje zpětnou vazbu na to, jak koně vnímají přepravu a nakolik je pro ně tato manipulace stresujícím faktorem, který může dále ovlivnit jejich chování, zdravotní stav nebo výkon. Druhá část se věnuje praktickému pozorování šesti koní plemene minihorse. Cílem bylo prokázat, že přeprava je pro koně výrazný stresový faktor, který je zapotřebí sledovat pro zachování welfare. K hodnocení fyziologie stresu byl stanoven trias koní před přepravou a porovnáván s hodnotami získanými v průběhu přepravy a po přepravě. Důraz byl kladen především na stanovení tepové frekvence, která byla kontinuálně sledována v průběhu přepravy díky hrudnímu pásu zachycující EKG. Všechny získané hodnoty byly statisticky vyhodnoceny pomocí párového t-testu. Výsledky prokázaly statisticky významný (p<0,05) vliv přepravy na všechny sledované fyziologické ukazatele.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis provides comprehensive knowledge in the field of horse transport. The first part focuses on a literature review, which includes the history of horse transport, methods of horse transport, legislation, requirements for transportation, methods of accustoming the horse to transport, principles of handling the horse during transport and the physiology of stress during transport. The physiology of stress in particular is described in more detail in the thesis, for it provides understanding of how horses perceive transport and how much this manipulation is a stressful factor for them, which can further affect their behavior, health or performance. The second part is devoted to the practical observation of six horses of the minihorse breed. The aim was to prove that transport is a significant stress factor for horses, which needs to be monitored to maintain welfare. To evaluate the physiology of the stress, the horse's triad was determined before transport and compared with the values obtained during and after transport. Emphasis was placed mainly on determining the heart rate, which was continuously monitored during transport by the ECG capture chest belt. All values obtained were statistically evaluated by paired t-test. The results showed a statistically significant (p<0.05) effect of transport on all monitored physiological indicators.
