Light Curves of compact objects

Abstract:

In this thesis we study the light curves of neutron stars with extremely strong magnetic fields, magnetars. These magnetic fields deform the crusts of the stars which leads to growth of their luminous intensity observed as flashes. Describing the mechanism of generation of these flashes and mathematical description of their shapes is still just a partly solved problem. Studied light curves were obtained by space telescope’s Swift module, BAT. Later in thesis we fit these flashes by mathematical model function designed by Gavriil, Kaspi and Woods. Then we use an alternative solution, our own modification of this model. In the end of the thesis we compare the models and discuss the results.

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci se věnujeme zkoumání světelných křivek neutronových hvězd s extrémně silnými magnetickými poli, magnetarů. Jejich magnetická pole deformují obal hvězd, čímž dochází k nárustu intezity vyzařování, pozorovaných jako záblesky. Popis mechanismu vzniku těchto záblesků a matematický popis jejich tvaru jsou problémem, který není zcela vyřešený. Zkoumané světelné křivky se záblesky byly pořízeny vesmírnou sondou Swift, konkrétně jejím modulem BAT. Tyto záblesky v práci fitujeme matematickým modelem navrhnutým Gavriilem, Kaspi a Woodsem. Kromě tohoto modelu jsme ještě využili jeho modifikaci, kterou jsme sami navrhli jako alternativní řešení. V závěru práce oba modely srovnáváme a diskutujeme výsledky jimi pořizené.
