Influence of neuroscience information on judgement of quality of explanations of psychological phenomena

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá tzv. efektem svůdného vábení (Weisberg, Keil, Goodstein, Rawson, & Gray, 2008) neboli vlivem neurovědních informací obsažených ve vysvětleních psychologických jevů na úsudky o jejich kvalitě. Hlavním cílem této práce bylo vyzkoumat, zda přidání irelevantních neurovědních informací zvyšuje hodnocení kvality vysvětlení a zda přidání doprovodného ilustračního materiálu zvyšuje vliv neurovědních informací v textové podobě. Studentům psychologie (N=255) byla administrována zkrácená verze metody Weisbergové et al. (2008), doplněná o třetí úroveň neurovědních informací obsahující fMRI skeny mozku. Tato práce využívala experimentální 2x3 mezisubjektový design (s úrovněmi „kvalita vy-světlení“ a „neurovědní informace“). Vnímaná kvalita vysvětlení byla hodnocena na škále od 1 do 7. Bylo zjištěno, že neurovědní informace signifikantně zvyšují hodnocení vnímané kvality vysvětlení bez závislosti na jejich skutečné kvalitě. Přidání neurovědního ilustračního materiálu signifikantně zvyšuje vliv neuro-vědních informací v textové podobě. Dobrá a špatná vysvětlení jsou od sebe rozpoznatelná. Obdobně jako ve studii Weisbergové et al. (2008) byla prokázána přítomnost efektu svůdného vábení v procesu hodnocení kvality vysvětlení psychologických jevů, na rozdíl od výzkumu Weisbergové et al. (2008) se tento efekt dostavil nezávisle na skutečné kvalitě informací, ale byl ovlivněn druhem neurovědního materiálu. Vzhledem k nízké velikosti účinku neurovědních informací je třeba dále tento jev zkoumat především z hlediska jeho možných příčin a dalších proměnných zasahujících do procesu hodnocení kvality vysvětlení.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the Seductive Allure Effect (Weisberg, Keil, Goodstein, Rawson, & Gray, 2008) which means the influence of neuroscientific information, contained in the psychogical explanations, on the judgments of their quality. The main goal of this paper was to find out whether the addition of logi-cally irrelevant neuroscientific information leads to increase in the perceived quality of explanation and whether the illustratory visual neuroscientific materials contained in the explanation increase the influence of the neuroscientific information. A brief version of Weisberg’s et al. (2008) measure, extended with the third condition containing fMRI scans, was administered to Psychology students (N=255). The experimental 2x3 between – subjects design (independent variable conditions: „explanation quality“ and „neuroscientific information“) was applied. Perceived explanation quality was indicated on a 7 - point scale. It was found out that neuroscientific information contained in the explanation increase significantly its perceived quality. Adding illustratory neuroscientific materials increase significantly the influence of neuroscientific information on a perceived explanation quality. Moreover, the good explanations are distinguishable from the poor ones. Consistently with Weisberg‘s et al. (2008) findings, the Seductive Allure Effect influence on the evaluation of psychological explanations quality was revealed. Unlike Weisberg‘s et al. (2008) findings, the effect does not differ due to the real explanation quality but it differs due to the neuroscientific information type. Considering the low effect size of neuroscientific information in this paper, it’s necesarry to explore the Seductive Allure possible causes and other variables that might influence this effect.
