Banking Integration and Financial Stability in Europe

Anotácia:

Cílem disertační práce je zhodnotit vztah mezi integrací a stabilitou evropského bankovního sektoru. Práce je zaměřena na dvě hlavní témata: hodnocení integrace retailového bankovnictví a analýzu souvislosti mezi stupněm integrace velkoobchodního a retailového bankovnictví a úrovní finanční stability. Obě témata jsou zkoumána v širším kontextu spolu s rešerší související literatury a formulací relevantních konceptů. Navržená metodologie neparametrické analýzy dynamiky úrokových sazeb na evropských trzích retailového bankovnictví přispívá k tvorbě ukazatele bankovní integrace založeného na cenách bankovních služeb. Nejvyšší stupeň integrace je pak nalezen u firemních klientů v zemích eurozóny. Práce rovněž poskytuje empirické důkazy o dlouhodobém negativním vztahu mezi finanční stabilitou a oběma dimenzemi bankovní integrace založené na panelové kointegraci. Tyto poznatky jsou v rozporu s hypotézou o výhodách integrace v podobě sdílení rizik a diverzifikaci aktiv, naopak podporují tzv. puzzle diverzifikace bankovních aktiv. Předložená práce poskytuje důkazy pro heterogenní povahu přenášení úrokových sazeb v zemích eurozóny a konflikt mezi měnovou a makroprudenční politikou ECB.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to evaluate the relationship between integration and stability of the European banking sector. The thesis is focused on two main subjects: the evaluation of the retail banking integration and the association between the degree of wholesale and retail banking integration and the level of financial stability. Both subjects are studied in the broader context alongside with the review of related literature and formulation of relevant concepts. We propose a novel methodology for non-parametric analysis of interest rate dynamics in European retail banking markets resulting in price-based indicator of banking integration. The highest degree of integration is found for corporate clients in euro area countries. We also provide a cross-country empirical evidence on the long-term negative relationship between financial stability and both dimensions of banking integration based on panel cointegration analysis. The evidence is inconsistent with the risk-sharing and diversification hypothesis of integration benefits yet supports the bank assets diversification puzzle. The thesis supplies strong implications for the heterogeneous nature of the interest rate pass-through in the euro area countries and the conflict between ECB monetary and macroprudential policies.
