An Outline of the Theatre of the Deaf

Abstract:

Diplomová práce Podoby profesionálního divadla Neslyšících popisuje vývoj profesionálních divadelních aktivit Neslyšících. Vznik divadelních souborů Neslyšících je zasazen do historického kontextu. Podstatnou součástí práce je tedy také popis vývoje postojů většinové společnosti k Neslyšícím. Práce se zaměřuje na situaci divadel Neslyšících v USA a evropských zemích, neopomíjí však ani vývoj divadel sluchově postižených v Asii a v Austrálii. Samostatná kapitola je věnována vzniku profesionálního divadla Neslyšících na našem území. Na našem území existuje pouze jediné profesionální divadlo Neslyšících. V další části práce jsou dopodrobna popsány inscenační principy, které používá české Divadlo Neslyším (zal. 2002). V závěrečných kapitolách práce jsou zachycena teoretická východiska divadel Neslyšících a také význam těchto souborů. Podstatnou součástí práce jsou její přílohy, například slovníček pojmů ze života Neslyšících, seznam divadel Neslyšících, soupis repertoáru Divadla Neslyším, a také rekonstrukce některých inscenací pro děti a dospělé Divadla Neslyším.

Abstract:

This thesis describes the development of professional theatrical activities of the Deaf community. The origin of Deaf theatre groups is considered within its historical context. Consequently, the development of attitudes held by the rest of society towards the Deaf community forms an important part of this work. The situation of Deaf theatre groups in the USA and European countries, as well as in Asia and Australia, is focused further on.. A close attention is also paid to specific methods and techniques that are used in the productions of The I Cannot Hear Theatre, the only Deaf theatre group in our country, whose remarkable performances are described in detail. The Appendix is a substantial part of the thesis, comprising, for example, a wordlist of frequent items of vocabulary from deaf people’s environment, list of Deaf theatre groups, overview of The I Cannot Hear Theatre’s repertoire, or analyses of a number of their plays for children and adults.
