Using honeypots for exploit analysis

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá možnostmi využití honeypotů, či jiných nástrojů, při detekci a analýze první fáze útoku, neboli tzv. exploitaci systému, včetně detekce zneužití zranitelnosti nulového dne. V rámci práce jsou definovány dnešní typy kybernetických útoků a stručně popsány základní pojmy a principy související s exploitací systému. Dále je provedena analýza soudobých dostupných řešení pro detekci první fáze útoku, společně s ověřením možnosti reálného nasazení honeypotu Argos v testovacím prostředí a jeho automatizovaného nasazení za použití virtualizace. Poté je otestováno chování honeypotu Argos vůči pokusům o exploitaci systému s využitím frameworku Metasploit. Na základě tohoto testování je navržen způsob efektivního zpracování získaných dat. Na závěr práce jsou sepsána doporučení pro nasazení honeypotu Argos v reálném prostředí a definovány další možné způsoby rozvoje konceptu honeypotu Argos.

Abstract:

This Bachelor's thesis focuses on the possible usage of honeypots and other tools for detection and analysis of the first attack phase, i.e., system exploitation, including detection of zero-day exploits. The thesis defines current types of cyber attacks and briefly describes basic concepts and principles related to system exploitation. Then follows an analysis of currently available solutions for the detection of the first attack phase, including evaluation of possible a real-world deployment of the Argos honeypot in a testing environment and its automated deployment with using of virtualization. The behavior of an exploited Argos honeypot is tested using the Metasploit framework. This testing then serves as a basis for a new way of effective processing of acquired data. The thesis concludes with recommendations for the Argos deployment in a real-world environment and definitions of other possible ways of development the Argos honeypot concept.
