Euler charakteristics of manifolds

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci se věnujeme vektorovým polím na hladkých varietách a jejich nulovým bodům. Zejména počet nulových bodů, pokud každý počítáme s příslušnou násobností, se ukáže jako nezávislý na konkrétním vektorovém poli, neboť je roven Eulerově charakteristice. Další způsob, jak zavést Eulerovu charakteristiku, je sečtením patřičně vynásobených počtů simplexů (tj. vrcholy, hrany, stěny, atd.), které přísluší určité triangulaci variety. Cílem práce je pak ukázat, že tyto definice vždy vedou ke stejnému výsledku, či přesněji, dokázat, že pro každou triangulaci lze sestrojit patřičné vektorové pole, jehož nulové body korespondují se simplexy zvolené triangulace.

Abstract:

In this thesis, we study vector fields on smooth manifolds and their zeros. Namely, the number of zeros, when counted with appropriate multiplicities, turns out to be independent of the vector field in question and is the Euler characteristic. A different way of introducing the Euler characteristic is by means of the numbers of simplices (vertices, edges, triangles etc.) of a triangulation of the manifold. The aim of this thesis is to show that these definitions always lead to the same result. More precisely, we prove this by constructing, for any given triangulation, an appropriate vector field whose zeros correspond to the simplices of the triangulation.
