The Development of the German Expressionist Film

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with German expressionist film, analyzing its developement in the theoretical part and focusing on three particular films in the practical part. The aim of my thesis is to attempt to map the developement of German expressionist film, ie. what was the forementioned film era preceded and followed by; to discover the influences of its developement and to explain, why this period of German film has such importance for both the German and the international film. In the practical part I analyse the following three films: "Das Kabinett des Dr. Caligari", "Nosferatu, Eine Symphonie des Grauens" and "Metropolis." Next to dealing with their contributions to the film, I also compare them with each other in order to capture their common features and find the innovations they brought.

Abstract:

Ve své diplomové práci se zabývám německým expresionistickým filmem, konkrétně pak v teoretické části jeho vývojem a v praktické části třemi konkrétními filmy. Cílem mé práce je pokusit se zmapovat jeho vývoj, tzn. co mu předcházelo a co následovalo; zjistit, co jeho vývoj ovlivnilo a vysvětlit, proč je toto období německého filmu důležité z hlediska filmu německého i celosvětového. V praktické části analzyuji tři flimy: "Das Kabinett des Dr. Caligari", "Nosferatu, Eine Symphonie des Grauens" a "Metropolis". Kromě toho, že se zabývám jejich přínosem pro film, srovnávám je i mezi sebou s cílem zachytit společné znaky a najít novinky, které s sebou přinesly.
