Mental Illness Viewed Through Photography

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem této bakalářské práce je využití fotografie v psychiatrické péči a její význam pro terapii a destigmatizaci. Účelem této práce je osvětlit vnitřní prožívání lidí trpících psychickými poruchami a jejich důsledky. Tato bakalářská práce je rozdělena na teoretickou a praktickou část. Teoretická část je zaměřena především na historii využití fotografie k léčbě psychiatrických pacientů a její současné využití. Teoretická část popisuje také dílo vybraných fotografů, jejichž tvorba souvisí s tématem bakalářské práce, a zároveň se zabývá možnými důsledky stigmatizace psychických poruch ze strany médií. Praktickou část tvoří fotografie několika osob trpících duševní poruchou, přičemž jejich fotografie jsou doprovázeny popisem těchto nemocí. Popis nemoci u fotografie nemocného má postavit teorii do kontrastu se vzhledem člověka, který má diagnostikovanou psychickou poruchu. Cílem této práce jako celku je ukázat osoby s duševním onemocněním jako běžné lidi, kteří nejsou definováni svými chorobami, a zároveň změnit pohled společnosti na lidi trpící těžkostmi způsobenými jejich vnitřním bojem s duševní nemocí.

Abstract:

The main theme of this bachelor thesis is a use of photography in psychiatry and its meaning for therapy and destigmatization. The purpose of this thesis is to shine a light of understanding on the struggles of people suffering from psychiatric diseases and consequences of psychiatric diseases symptoms. The bachelor thesis is divided into theoretical and practical part. Theoretical part is focused on history of photography use in treatment of psychiatric patients and its current form. Theoretical part also describes the work of selected photographers, whose work is related to the thesis theme as well as possible consequences of stigmatization by media. In practical part the author tries to fight back this stigmatization by taking photographs of several psychiatric patients while describing their diagnosis and putting it in contrast with their appearance. The purpose of this thesis as a whole is to show persons with psychiatric disease as normal people who are not defined by their diseases and to educate other people on how to approach people suffering from hardship caused by their inner struggle.
