Iconography of the schools of Gandhara and Mathura

Abstract:

Buddhistické umění gandhárské a mathurské školy v období kušánské dynastie (asi polovina 1. století n.l. - polovina 3. století n.l.) navazuje na starší umělecké tradice indických škol i škol tzv. asijského helénismu. V ranějších dobách (asi od 3. století př.n.l.) byl Buddha zobrazován anikonickými symboly, například kolem dharmy (dharmačakra), stopami (buddhapáda), prázdným trůnem (buddhásana) nebo stromem probuzení (bódhivrkša). Toto anikonické umění má svůj původ pravděpodobně v předbuddhistických příznivých symbolech, které byly rituálně efektivnější než antropomorfní zobrazování božstev v té době. V buddhismu byly tyto symboly spojovány s narativní tradicí života Buddhy. Přesto se první antropomorfní zobrazení Buddhy objevují již v 1. století př.n.l., ne-li dříve, a to v obou školách, gandhárské i mathurské, přibližně ve stejnou dobu. Již od počátku mají tato zobrazení pevně danou ikonografickou strukturu. Jako příklad lze uvést zobrazení znaků a charakteristik těla (lakšana), gest rukou (mudrá), pozic těla a nohou (ásana), nebo zobrazení Buddhy mezi dvěma božstvy (později nahrazenými dvěma bódhisattvy). Příčina zobrazování Buddhy v antropomorfní podobě v této době tkví nejspíše v rozvoji hnutí oddanosti (bhakti) a zájmu o jeho pozemský život; vliv mahájány na tato zobrazení je problematický. Větší oblíbenosti však dosáhlo antropomorfní zobrazování Buddhy až v kušánské době, a to i přesto, že vládci této dynastie pravděpodobně sami nepraktikovali buddhismus, ale vlastní kult zbožštělých vládců, spojený s íránskými solárními kulty. Chronologické určení vlády kušánských panovníků, jakož i určení vzniku jednotlivých zobrazení je nejisté, což tkví mimo jiné i v odlišném pojetí tehdejší indické historiografie. Vývoj buddhistického umění souvisel s džinistickým a hinduistickým uměním, a také s uměním místních kultů plodnosti. Interpretace některých zobrazení z této doby však není jednotná. Ve výzkumu těchto zobrazení by měl být kladen větší zřetel na jejich rituální, nejen estetickou funkci.

Abstract:

Buddhist art of the schools of Gandhara and Mathura under the dynasty of Kushanas (c. half 1st century AD - c. half 3rd century AD) is continued in older artistic traditions of both Indian schools of art and so-called schools of Asian Hellenism. Aniconic emblems, such as the wheel of dharma (dharmacakra), footprints (buddhapada), an empty throne (buddhasana), or the tree of awakening (bodhivrksha), were used to depict the Buddha in earlier periods (c. since 3rd century BC). This aniconic art had its origins probably from pre-Buddhist auspicious emblems, that were believed to be ritually more efficacious than the anthropomorphic images of the deities in that period. These emblems were connected with a narrative tradition about the Buddha´s life in Buddhism. Nevertheless, the first anthropomorphic depiction of the Buddha appeared in both the Gandhara and Mathura schools approximately at the same period in the 1st century BC, if not earlier. From their earliest origins, the iconographic structure of those depictions was firmly established. It consisted of depictions of marks and characteristics of the body (lakshana), hand-gestures (mudra), positions of the body and legs (asana), and a figure of the Buddha between two deities (replaced with two bodhisattvas later). Depictions of the Buddha in anthropomorphic forms were probably initiated by the development of devotion movements (bhakti) and an increasing interest in Buddha’s earth-life; influence of the Mahayana Buddhism is questionable. The anthropomorphic depictions of the Buddha, however, attained broad popularity during the reign of the Kushana dynasty, although its rulers were not supposedly attached to Buddhism, but did practice an own cult of deified rulers influenced by the Iranian solar cults. Nevertheless, chronological specification of the reign of the Kushana rulers and origins of particular depictions are uncertain due to the different concept of Indian historiography at that time. Development of Buddhist art was related to Jain and Hindu art and to the art of native fertility cults as well. Interpretation of some depictions of this period, however, has not yet been unified. Research on those depictions should pay more attention to their ritual function and not only to the aesthetic aspect.
