From Church to Mosque, from Mosque to Church. A Comparision of Christian and Islamic Sacral Architecture

Abstract:

Diplomová práce představuje srovnání křesťanské a islámské sakrální architektury, a to s cílem demonstrovat, jak se rozdíly jednotlivých náboženských koncepcí odráží v uměleckém uchopení daného sakrálního prostoru. V úvodu je proto v krátkosti pojednáno o estetice křesťanství a islámu a její vazbě na texty Bible a Koránu. Následně jsou popsány vzájemné interakce architektur obou náboženství v období počátků formování sakrálního prostoru, je vypracována a porovnána klasifikace a typologie kostelů a mešit, a jsou představeny jednotlivé části exteriéru a interiéru těchto staveb, jakož i reflektován způsob jejich dekorace. Závěrem jsou takto získané obecné poznatky demonstrovány na třech konkrétních příkladech (Hagii Sofii, mešitě a katedrále v Córdobě a mudéjarském stylu), v nichž v průběhu historie došlo ke střetu křesťanského a islámského uměleckého stylu, což je činí z perspektivy této práce pozoruhodnými.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis represents a comparision of Christian and Islamic sacral architecture, focusing on demonstrating how the differences between the two religion conceptions are reflected in an artificial layout of the sacral space. Therefore, the aesthetics of Christianity and Islam and its relation to the texts of Bible and Quran is shortly discussed in the introduction. Subsequently, the mutual interaction of the two religions architecture in the beginning of the sacral space forming era is described, the church and mosque typology and classification are developed and compared, and particular interior and exterior parts of these buildings are introduced, with an attention paid to their decoration. Finally, the gained knowledge is demonstrated on three examples (Hagia Sophia, the Mosque and Cathedral of Córdoba, and the Mudéjar style), where a collusion of Christian and Islamic art style occurred, which makes them worth our attention.
