Pre-mathematical concepts of pre-school children. Relationship of intelligence to pre-mathematical concepts of five-year-old children

Abstract:

Tato práce si klade za cíl zmapovat vztah mezi hodnotou inteligence a úrovní kvantitativních předmatematických představ u předškolních pětiletých dětí. V úvodní části práce je představeno teoretické pozadí a východiska práce. Následná výzkumná část se věnovala kvantitativní a kvalitativní analýze. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo dvacet dva dětí, které byly testovány prostřednictvím Ravenových progresivních barevných maticí a testu předmatematických představ. Test předmatematických představ byl sestaven pro účely této práce, Ravenovy matice byly zvoleny jako nástroj testování neverbání fluidní inteligence. V kvantitativní části práce se potvrdila existence silného pozitivního vztahu mezi inteligencí a úrovní předmatematických představ. Kvalitativní část výzkumu se věnovala analýze možných příčin neúspěchů a strategií respondentů při řešení položek v testu předmatematikcých představ na pozadí naměřených hodnot inteligence, které prokázaly využití pokročilejších strategií u dětí, jež byly současně úspěšnějšími řešiteli testu předmatematických představ a vykazovaly větší naměřené hodnoty inteligence. V závěrečné části práce shrnuje zjištění, definuje limity výzkumu a uvádí návrhy pro další výzkumy.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to examine the relationship between intelligence and the quantitative pre-mathematical concepts of five-year-old pre-school children. The opening chapters of the thesis present the theoretical background for the subsequent exploration, and the research itself is divided into a quantitative and a qualitative part. The sample comprised of twenty two children who were tested with Raven Progressive Coloured Matrices – chosen as a measurement of non-verbal fluid intelligence – and a test of pre-mathematical concepts, which was designed specifically for the purpose of this thesis. The results of the quantitative research confirmed the existence of a strong relationship between intelligence and the level of pre-mathematical concepts. The qualitative part of exploration engaged in analysis of possible reasons for failure in and strategies within the process of solving individual tasks in the test of pre-mathematical concepts, in the light of measured IQ, and showed that those children using more advanced strategies were also more successful in the test on the whole and their IQ was higher. The closing parts of the thesis summarize the findings, define the limits of the research and present suggestions for further exploration.
