Adoption of Roma children and the definition of kinship: an analysis of the book Year of the rooster (Rok kohouta) and its reception.

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá adopcí romských dětí, tato problematika je prezentována především z perspektivy teorie příbuzenství. Zaměřuje se na představy obyvatel "západní kulturní oblasti," které při vytváření příbuzenských vazeb vycházejí z modelu společně sdílené biologické substance a sociální příbuzenství je vnímáno jako nepravé a zrušitelné. Pomocí analýzy knihy "Rok kohouta" (Boučková, 2008), rozhovory s respondenty a případové studie se snažím přiblížit fenomén osvojení romských dětí neromskými rodiči. V této práci jsem se pokusila také upozornit na skutečnou podstatu problémů, které mají děti vyrůstající v náhradních rodinách.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the adoption of Roma children, this issue is presented primarily from the perspective of the theory of kinship. It focuses on the ideas of people in the "Western cultural sphere," that kinship ties in creating a model based on shared biological substance and social relationship is perceived as false and cancelable. By analyzing the book "Year of the Rooster" (Boučková, 2008), interviews with respondents and case study I attempt to explain the phenomenon of adoption of Roma children by non-Roma parents. In this thesis I also tried to put emphasis on the true nature of problems that children growing up in foster families have to face.
