Brass instruments making in the Czech lands in the 18th and 19th century with a focus on French Horns

Abstract:

Cílem předložené práce bylo zmapování výroby nátrubkových dechových nástrojů v českých zemích v 18. a 19. století. Toto téma bylo dosavadní odbornou literaturou zpracováno nesystematicky, pouze dílčími sondami. S ohledem na stav bádání byly za primární východisko výzkumu zvoleny hmotné prameny (průzkum 333 lesních rohů dochovaných v českých muzejních sbírkách). Časové vymezení tématu práce (18. a 19. století) vychází z výsledků výzkumu hmotných pramenů. Téma této práce bylo zpracováno ze tří základních hledisek: a) z hlediska výskytu a lokalizace daného nástrojařského řemesla v českých zemích; b) z hlediska popisu řemesla z pohledu organizačního, technologického a obchodního; c) z hlediska typu dochovaných nástrojů, recepce nových vývojových forem nástroje českými výrobci a z hlediska uplatnění jednotlivých nástrojových druhů v konkrétním prostředí.

Abstract:

The aim of this treatise was to map the production of brass instruments in the Czech lands in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. This theme had yet to be systematically approached by literature to date, which only brushes on the subject in part. In view of this circumstance it was decided to base the research primarily on material sources (a research of 333 French horns in the collections of Czech museums). The temporal boundaries of the topic (eighteenth and nineteenth century) were based on the results of the research of the physical sources. The treatise approaches the subject from three basic perspectives: a) the perspective of the occurrence and localisation of the given instrument-making craft in the Czech lands; b) the perspective of describing the craft in its aspects of organisation, technology, and business; c) the perspective of the types of extant instruments, the reception of new forms of instruments by Czech producers, and the perspective of the application of the various types of instruments in specific environments.
