Optical emission spectra of atoms and molecules

Abstract:

Selected school spectrometers are compared in this thesis according to their results on several experimental problems of optical emission spectroscopy. The introductory part starts with the consideration of the possibilities of spectroscopy education at secondary grammar schools. Then, the development of optical spectroscopy as of scientific method is outlined and common types of spectrometers (prism, grating, interferometric) and their basic properties (i.e. sensitivity and resolving power) are described. In the experimental part, the selected school spectrometers are first tested out in terms of their sensitivity and resolving power. Then, these devices are used to solve several spectroscopy problems: Rydberg constant and wavelength mass shift are determined from the measurement of Balmer line series of hydrogen and deuterium. Spin-orbit interaction constant is studied on resonance doublets of alkali metals. Vibrational constants of molecule N2 are evaluated from vibrational structure of electronic spectra. Measurement of continuous spectrum of halogen bulb provides a temperature of tungsten filament using Planck radiation law. The results of the experiments show, that the evaluated school spectrometers can be successfully used, particularly when high resolution is not required. In this sense they can be a useful educational tool.

Abstract:

V tejto bakalárskej práci porovnávame školské spektrometre podľa výsledkov vybraných experimentálnych problémov optickej emisnej spektroskopie. Úvodná časť sa najprv krátko zaoberá možnosťami výuky spektroskopie na strednej škole. Ďalej naznačuje priebeh vývoja spektroskopie ako vedeckej metódy a popisuje bežné typy spektrometrov (hranolové, mriežkové, interferometrické) a ich základné charakteristiky (napr. citlivosť a rozlíšenie). V experimentálnej časti sú najskôr vybrané školské prístroje otestované z hľadiska ich citlivosti a rozlíšenia. Ďalej sú tieto prístroje využité pre riešenia vybraných spektroskopických úloh: boli stanovené Rydbergova konštanta a hmotnostný posun z merania Balmerovej série atómu vodíka a deutéria. Na rezonančných dubletoch alkalických kovov bola študovaná spin-orbitálna konštanta. Vibračné konštanty molekuly N2 boli stanovené z vibračnej štruktúry elektrónového spektra. Zo spojitého spektra halogénovej žiarovky bola pomocou Planckovho vyžarovacieho zákona stanovená teplota volfrámového vlákna. Z výsledkov experimentov vyplýva, že študované školské prístroje možno dobre použiť k riešeniu problémov, ktoré nevyžadujú vysoké spektrálne rozlíšenie. Môžu byť preto užitočnou výukovou pomôckou.
