The concept of decadence in Czech lands 1880-2015

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce se zaměřuje na používání pojmu dekadence ve výtvarném umění na našem území v letech 1880–2015. Konstatuje problematické definování pojmu dekadence ve výtvarném umění. Zabývá se obsahovou a formální náplní tvorby, která je označována jako dekadentní v letech 1894–1925, později jako neodekadentní v období po roce 1980. Poukazuje na propojení uměleckých východisek mezi dekadencí a surrealismem. Proměnu dekadentních projevů v průběhu více než jednoho staletí sleduje na pozadí vztahů moderny, avantgardy a postmoderny. Současně se snaží poukázat na jistou kontinuitu používání určitých témat, dnes spojovaných výhradně s dekadencí, od období romantismu po současnost.

Abstract:

The Masteŕs thesis focuses on the use of the concept of decadence in the visual arts in our territory in the years 1880-2015. It states a problematic definition of the term decadence in the visual arts. It deals with the content and form of the work, which is described as decadence in the years 1894-1925, and later as neodecadence in the period after 1980. It points to the conection of artistic bases between decadence and surrealism. The Masteŕs thesis looks at transformation of decadence form over the course of more than a century against the background of the relationship between modernism, avant-garde and postmoderism. At the same time, it seeks point to a continuity in the use of certain themes, today exclusively associated with decadence, from the romanticism to the present.
