Acoustic defensive strategies of arachnids

Abstract:

Teoretická část mé bakalářské práce shrnuje základní informace o akustickém obranném chování a zaměřuje se na stridulaci, a to konkrétně na roli stridulace v obranném chování. Stridulace se vyskytuje u mnoha živočichů, nejvíce v kmeni Členovců, hlavně pak v třídě hmyzu. Stridulace je forma akustické komunikace, ať už vnitrodruhové či mezidruhové, a byla zaznamenána i u několika druhů pavouků. V této části se zaměřuji na její obrannou roli. Praktická část se věnuje přímo experimentům s pavouky druhu Palpimanus gibbulus. Hlavním cílem pokusů byl zjistit, zda-li má stridulace roli v akustické obraně a zda-li může sloužit k odvrácení útoku většího predátora, a to konkrétně k tomuto účelu použitý druh pavouka Eusparassus dufouri. Predátorovi byli předkládání stridulující jedinci druhu Palpimanus, jedinci nestridulující a jedinci jiných druhů jako kontrolní kořist. Bylo pozorováno, jak se Eusparassus zachová v přítomnosti stridulujícího či nestridulujícího jedince druhu Palpimanus, a zda-li má stridulace vliv na frekvenci útoku na ně. Ve výsledku bylo dokázáno, že na stridulující jedince podnikl predátor méně výpadů – pouze 37,9% (n=29) – oproti nestridulujícím – 58,6% (n=29), čas od dotyku po výpad byl delší u stridulujících jedinců a ani jeden stridulující jedinec nebyl uloven oproti dvěma nestridulujícím. Stridulace tedy jistou roli v obraně pavouka hraje, ne však natolik velkou, aby se bez ní Palpimanus neobešel.

Abstract:

The theoretical part of my thesis summarizes the basic informations about the acoustic defensive behavior and focuses on stridulation, especially on the role of stridulation in defensive behavior. Stridulation occurs in many animals, mostly in Arthropods, mainly in the class of insects. Stridulation is the form of acoustic communication, either intraspecific or interspecific and was identified as well in several spider species . In this section I focus on defensive role of stridulation. The practical part includes experiments with spider species Palpimanus gibbulus. The main aim of experiments was to determine if there's a role of stridulation in acoustic defense against larger predators, specifically for this purpose used spider species Eusparassus Dufouri. Predator were given stridulating individuals of Palpimanus species, not stridulating individuals of Palpimanus species and individuals of different not stridulating species as a control. It was observed how Eusparassus reacts in the presence of stridulating and not stridulating individuals of species Palpimanus, and if stridulation has influence on the frequency of the attack on them. It was observed that predator made fewer attacks on stridulating individuals - only 37.9% (n = 29) - compared with not stridulating individuals - 58.6% (n = 29), time from touch to attack was longer in stridulating individuals an no one individual was killed, compared with two not stridulating individuals which were killed . Therefore, stridulation plays a certain role in the defense of spiders.
