Determination of dragonfly larvae with particular focus on the genus Leucorrhinia

Abstract:

Vážky patří mezi hmyz s proměnou nedokonalou, ve vodě se vyvíjí vajíčko, z kterého se líhne larva. Ta ukončuje vývojový cyklus emergencí na substrátu čímž se přemění na dospělce. Širší veřejnost si mnohdy neuvědomuje, že vážky i další zástupci hmyzu mají larvální stádium a registruje pouze dospělce. Proto je vhodné informace o všech vývojových stupních při edukaci veřejnosti neopomíjet. Na základě exuvií, finálních svleků larev, můžeme například hodnotit poměr pohlaví, rozdíly v morfometrii, odhadovat hustotu populací, sledovat dynamiku emergence či hodnotit kvalitu biotopu. Exuvie také představuje důkaz rozmnožovaní druhu na lokalitě a materiál pro jeho determinaci. Diplomová práce uvádí výsledky výzkumu zaměřeného na studium morfometrie exuvií evropských zástupců rodu Leucorrhinia, a pilotního testování determinace larev českých vážek ve školách. V rámci práce byly měřeny části těla exuvií, které byly důležité k porovnávání morfometrických znaků a pomocí nichž je možné druhy jasně odlišit. Většina naměřených parametrů závisí hlavně na druhu a lokalitě. Mnohorozměrná analýza dat navíc ukázala, že L. caudalis byla zcela separována od ostatních druhů z rodu Leucorhinia. K určení rodů larev byly vytvořeny určovací klíče pro podřád Anisoptera vhodné k edukaci žáků. Výsledky ukázaly, že úspěšnost správných odpovědí žáků na otázky týkající se základní charakteristiky dospělců a larev vážek závisí zejména na třídě a stupni vzdělávání. Bylo by vhodné tyto výsledky zkoumat pomocí dalších vyučovacích metod a předávat tyto informace dál v rámci malých kurzů nejen žákům, ale také širší veřejnosti.

Abstract:

Dragonflies and damselflies belong to insects with an imperfect transformation meaning that an egg develops in the water and hatches into a larva. The larva completes the development cycle by emergence on the substrate and thus transforms into an adult. The general public is often unaware of the fact that Odonata and other insects have a larval stage and perceive only their adult stage. Therefore, information on all developmental stages should not be overlooked when educating the public. Based on exuviae, the final molts of larvae, we can for example assess sex ratios, differences in morphometrics, estimate population densities, monitor emergence dynamics or assess habitat quality. Exuviae also provide evidence of reproduction of a species on locality and material for its determination. The thesis presents the results of a research aimed at studying the exuviae morphometry of European representatives of the genus Leucorrhinia, and a pilot test of the of Czech dragonflies determination larvae at schools. The body parts of the exuviae, which were important for comparison of morphometric characters and by means of which the species can be clearly distinguished, were measured. The most of the measured parameters depend mainly on the species and locality. Moreover, multivariate data analysis showed that L. caudalis was completely separated from other species in the genus Leucorhinia. Identification keys for the suborder Anisoptera were developed to determine the larval genera suitable for educating students. The results showed that the success rate of students' correct answers to questions related to the basic characteristics of dragonfly adults and larvae depended mainly on the class and the level of education. It would be useful to investigate these results using other teaching methods and to pass this information on in small courses not only to pupils but also to the wider public.
