Ethnography of the Gym: Construction of the Body

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá otázkou genderu a jeho vazby na proces konstrukce těl vznikajících v prostředí posilovny. Text je zaměřen na vybrané diskursivní přístupy, jejichž aplikace v praxi byla sledována. Práci soustředím na motivace návštěvníků posilovny k utváření takových těl, jež jsou z jejich pohledu dokonalá a jimž se chtějí svou snahou a přítomností v posilovně přiblížit. Během výzkumu mne zaujala otázka, jestli mají větší šanci budovat své tělo lidé s vyššími příjmy.Důležitým bodem je také sociální konstrukce ideálního těla, ke kterému je směřováno. Práce bude pojednávat rovněž o vzájemných interakcích mezi lidmi v posilovně, o způsobu formování různých sociálních vazeb a jejich významu pro vlastní konstrukci těla a genderu. Práce je založena na vlastním kvalitativním terénním výzkumu. Hlavní metodou je interview a zúčastněné pozorování.

Abstract:

Diploma thesis deals with the issue of gender and its links to the process of construction of the bodies of the emerging in the environment of the gym. The Text is focused on the selected discourse approaches, which were monitored in practice.The focus of this work is on the visitors´ motivation to the creation of such bodies in the gym, which are perfect from their perspective and why they want to make their effort and presence in the gym. During the research I was interested in one question and that is if people with higher incomes have a greater chance to build their bodies. The important point is also the social construction of the ideal body to which it is everything directed. The work will discuss also the reciprocal interactions between people in the gym, the way of forming various social ties and their significance for our own design of the body and gender. The work is based on the qualitative research field. The main method is an interview and a participating observation.
