Burnout syndrome of parents of children with mental illness

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem výzkumu bylo zmapovat výskyt syndromu vyhoření u rodičů dětí s vybraným duševním onemocněním (zaměřeno na rodiče dětí s ADHD a PAS) a zjištění míry stresu těchto rodičů. Metodika: Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 113 rodičů, kteří splňovali vstupní kritéria. Sběr dat byl proveden pomocí standardizovaného dotazníku Škála vnímání stresu (Perceived Stress Scale - PSS) a dotazníku Parenteral Burnout Assesment (PBA) doplněného o sociodemografické údaje. Výsledky: Zatímco u rodičů dětí bez duševního onemocnění byl syndrom vyhoření zjištěn jen ve 2 případech (tj. v 5 %), a ve 2 dalších případech bylo zjištěno riziko syndromu vyhoření, u rodičů dětí s duševním onemocněním byl syndrom vyhoření zjištěn ve 12 případech (17 %) a v dalších 12 případech bylo zjištěno riziko syndromu vyhoření. Průměrné skóre míry stresu bylo u rodičů dětí bez nemoci 19,7, a rodičů dětí s nemocí 21,0, přičemž u rodičů dětí s ADHD byl průměr 21,3, u rodičů dětí s PAS byl průměr 21,2 a u rodičů dětí, které trpí jak ADHD tak PAS byl průměr 19,9. Signifikantní rozdílnosti byly zjištěny mezi skupinami rodičů dětí bez diagnózy a rodičů dětí s autismem (p < 0,001), rodičů dětí bez diagnózy a rodičů dětí s oběma diagnózami (ADHD a PAS) (p = 0,005) a rovněž mezi rodiči dětí s ADHD a rodiči dětí s PAS (p = 0,048). Závěr: Byl tak zjištěn statisticky významný vztah mezi syndromem vyhoření rodičů a duševním onemocněním dětí. Vztah mezi mírou stresu rodičů a duševním onemocněním dětí nebyl prokázán.

Abstract:

Aim: The aim of the research was to map the incidence of burnout syndrome in parents of children with selected mental illness (focused on parents of children with ADHD and PAS) and to determine the degree of stress of these parents. Methodology: The research group consisted of 113 parents who met the entry criteria. Data collection was carried out using the standardized Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) questionnaire, the Parenteral Burnout Assessment Questionnaire (PBA) and the Sociodemographic Data Questionnaire. Results: While parents of children without mental illness were found to have burnout in only 2 cases (i.e. 5%), and in 2 other cases the risk of burnout was detected, in parents of children with mental illness burnout was detected in 12 cases (17%) and in another 12 cases the risk of burnout was detected. The average stress score was 19.7 for parents of children without illness, and 21.0 for parents of children with illness, with an average of 21.3 for parents of children with ADHD, an average of 21.2 for parents of children with ASD, and an average of 19.9 for parents of children suffering from both ADHD and ASD. Significant differences were found between the groups of parents of children without diagnosis and parents of children with autism (p < 0.001), parents of children without diagnosis and parents of children with both diagnoses (ADHD and ASD) (p = 0.005), as well as between parents of children with ADHD and parents of children with ASD (p = 0.048). Conclusion: A statistically significant relationship between parental burnout and children's mental illness was found. The relationship between parents' stress levels and children's mental illness has not been proven.
