The Social Construction of Environmental Issues: The Case of Climate Change

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problematikou sociální konstrukce environmentálních problémů. Práce používá teorii sociálního konstruktivismu k poodhalení zákonitostí, které vedou k určitému vymezení a vnímání environmentálních témat napříč společností. Hlavní oblasti, kde dochází k sociální konstrukci environmentálních problémů, jsou věda a média. V této práci je rovněž prezentována případová studie, která je příkladem toho, jak se média v České republice věnují environmentálním tématům, zvláštní pozornost je věnována mediálnímu obrazu klimatické změny. Výsledky se nesnaží být reprezentativní, ačkoli se přibližují tendencím popsaným v odborné literatuře – určitá událost může podnítit zájem médií a tím zvýšit rovněž veřejný zájem. Práce také staví na historii environmentální sociologie a to tak, aby byl představen vývoj zájmu o tato témata a problémy, které v současné společnosti představují fenomén mnoha tváří s přesahy do rozličných sfér sociálního a veřejného života.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the problem of the social construction of diverse environmental issues. It employs the theory of social constructivism to reveal partially the process of social and public definition and perception of various environmental issues at different levels. The main realms of the social construction of environmental issues are science and media. In the thesis a case study is presented to provide an example of how the media in the Czech Republic cover environmental topics, particularly climate change. The results are not meant to be representative, however they indicate a tendency described in academic resources – a particular event might stress the attention of media and therefore cause a rise of the public concern. The thesis also draws upon the history of environmental sociology to show the evolution of concern about these issues which present a phenomenon of many faces and overlaps into various spheres of social and public life in the current society.
