Algorithm as an artistic tool - imagery in algorithmic art in the second half of the 20th century

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis develops on the basis of the question "What are the minimum conditions under which a set of characters works as an image?", that the painter Harold Cohen became interested in the early 70's. The topic of imagery and image creation is focused on the emergence of image in algorithmic art and is closely related to algorithmic aesthetics. However, Wassily Kandinsky had a similar idea in traditional art, almost fifty years before Cohen. Despite the fact that artists and theorists have been working on the issue for several decades, they have not yet found an answer to it. A major milestone for algorithmic art was the access to digital computers in the 1960s, when names such as Herbert Franke, Michael Noll and Max Bense came to the fore, and finally Harold Cohen and his system Aaron. The aim of the work is to describe algorithmic art, algorithmic aesthetics and approach to answer the question of image creation in algorithmic art through the work of these artists.

Abstract:

Bakalárska diplomová práca sa rozvíja na základe otázky „Aké sú minimálne podmienky, za ktorých sada znakov funguje ako obraz?“, ktorou sa začiatkom 70. rokov začal zaujímať maliar Harold Cohen. Tématika obrazotvornosti je zameraná na vznik obrazu v algoritickom umení a úzko súvisí s algoritmickou estetikou. Podobnou myšlienkou sa však v tradičnom umení zaoberal už Wassily Kandinsky, takmer päťdesiat rokov pred Cohenom. Napriek tomu, že sa danou otázkou zaoberajú umelci a teoretici naprieč rôznymi štýlmi už niekoľko desiatok rokov, doposiaľ na ňu nenašli odpoveď. Zásadným míľníkom sa pre algoritmické umenie stal príchod digitálnych počítačov v 60. rokoch, kedy do povedomia vstupujú mená ako Herbert Franke, Michael Noll či Max Bense a napokon aj Harold Cohen a jeho systém Aaron. Cieľom práce je popísanie algoritmického umenia, algoritmickej estetiky a priblíženie sa k zodpovedaniu otázky obrazotvornosti v algoritmickom umení aj skrz prácu týchto umelcov.
