Economic Impacts of the Illusion of Control in Gambling

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na problematiku iluze kontroly v kontextu finančního chování hráčů hazardních her. Hlavním cílem je na základě analýzy identifikovat vztah mezi iluzí kontroly a rozhodováním hazardních hráčů, zejména jejich ochotou riskovat, výší a frekvencí sázek, a zjistit ekonomické dopady tohoto jevu na jednotlivce. Teoretická část vychází z poznatků behaviorální ekonomie a psychologie hazardu a zaměřuje se na vysvětlení iracionálního rozhodování v podmínkách rizika, zejména na koncept iluze kontroly. Praktická část je založena na kvantitativním výzkumu realizovaném pomocí dotazníkového šetření mezi 91 respondenty, kteří aktivně hrají hazardní hry, a to formou online i osobního sběru dat. Data byla analyzována pomocí regresní a korelační analýzy. Výsledky naznačují, že nejvýznamnější prediktory měsíčních výdajů jsou frekvence hraní a sázení nad vlastní možnosti, zatímco iluze kontroly může souviset s vyšší ochotou riskovat a výskytem finančních problémů. Práce poukazuje na význam psychologických faktorů při ekonomickém rozhodování hráčů. Výsledky mohou přispět k lepšímu porozumění rizikovému chování hráčů.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the issue of the illusion of control in the context of the financial behavior of gambling players. The main aim is, based on analysis, to identify the relationship between the illusion of control and the decision-making of gambling players, especially their willingness to take risks, the amount and frequency of bets, and to determine the economic impacts of this phenomenon on individuals. The theoretical part is based on findings from behavioral economics and the psychology of gambling and focuses on explaining irrational decision-making under conditions of risk, especially on the concept of the illusion of control. The practical part is based on quantitative research conducted using a questionnaire survey among 91 respondents who actively gamble, both through online and in-person data collection. The data were analyzed using regression and correlation analysis. The results indicate that the most significant predictors of monthly expenditures are gambling frequency and betting beyond one's financial means, while the illusion of control may be associated with a higher willingness to take risks and the occurrence of financial problems. The thesis highlights the importance of psychological factors in the economic decision-making of players. The results may contribute to a better understanding of risky behavior among players.
