Rivers Dying and Rivers Alive: Environmental Concerns in 20th Century Czech Literature

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá environmentálními tématy, především obrazy řeky, v dílech Karla Dvořáčka (Olza a Mrtvá řeka) a Ludmily Hořké (Řeka). Díla jsou nahlížena optikou ekokritiky, jejíž vznik, vývoj a teorie jsou popsány v teoretické části práce. Cílem práce je představit na základě studia odborné literatury koncept ekokritiky (a pojmy s ní související) a provést ekokritickou analýzu vybraných děl. Práce obsahuje také didaktickou kapitolu, jíž cílem je zvážit didaktický potenciál ekokritiky spolu s vybranými díly Karla Dvořáčka a Ludmily Hořké, a navrhnout jejich konkrétní využití v rámci výuky českého jazyka a literatury na středních školách a gymnáziích tak, aby byli studenti skrze českou literaturu 20. století uvedeni do problematiky současné environmentální krize a zapojili se tak do jejího řešení.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with environmental concerns, mainly images of rivers, in the works of Karel Dvořáček (Olza and Mrtvá řeka) and Ludmila Hořká (Řeka). These texts are seen through ecocriticism, whose formation, development, and theory are described in the theoretical chapter. This thesis aims to introduce the concept of ecocriticism and related terms based on specialized literature. Furthermore, it aims to carry out an ecocritical analysis of chosen texts. The didactic chapter focuses on the educational potential of ecocriticism and chosen works of Karel Dvořáček and Ludmila Hořká. Another aim of this chapter is to propose a concrete use of these concepts and works within the scope of the teaching of the Czech language and literature in high schools and grammar schools in order to raise awareness of current environmental crisis and inspire students to actively participate in dealing with such crises.
